I just finished my diploma in mineral technology and the end of my internship is near. After three years of hard student life and honestly way too much drinking, I ask myself what I would like to do. Two choice appeared to me, should I go travel for one year straight and reward myself or should I start looking directly for work?

Time to go straight into the workforce. You updated your resume and applied to a few mining companies. You should be able to get a great job since you already have a foot in the door of the mining industry. After a couple of days, you receive a call from a big Val d'Or company. You feel excited, but it's not the company you wanted the most.

Even if a surveyor job is not your first choice, you drive all the way to Val d'Or with your best shirt and walk into the interview wanting to impress them. You were prepared, so you answered all the questions with ease. HR and the boss seem happy. You talk about your training, your field experience, and what motivates you about the job. Three days later, you receive a call offering you the job, and you take it immediately. The first week goes smoothly, you learn the basics of the job, and after a bit of training, you are like a fish in the sea. Next week, ur supervisor will ask you to go survey a new gallery. Once there, you see that the walls and the back are not bolted, your coworker tells you it's all safe since he scaled everything, but you are a bit skeptical.

You trust your coworker, after all, he has been working there for a couple of weeks longer than you, so he must be right. You advance in the gallery and start the survey, but then a truck on the higher level causes a bunch of vibration. A massive rockfall occurs, and you and your partner get crushed to death.

You did well since some massive loose rocks started falling near you. You are pretty mad at your coworker since his mistake could have cost y'all your lives. The gallery is now safe, and you can proceed to your survey.

Plot twist, he did not take it well and proceeded to beat the shit out of you with your own survey equipment. Lucky for you, a couple of miners saw what happened and came to your help. Your dumb coworker is now fired and has been arrested for assault and battery. You lost some dignity, got your nose destroyed, but still, you are the big winner. Your insurance is even paying you a new nose! Also, HR wants to meet with you...

You don't let your emotions take control, and you continue your job like a pro. The day finished without any more incidents. Your bosses are happy with your work. Months pass, and you end up really liking your job; you don't even have to work with your unprofessional coworker, since his careless self got his foot crushed by a truck. You are so good at your job that your bosses offer you a promotion to a supervisor job.

People at HR are way friendlier than you expected. You explain to them what happened, and they understand the situation. You are pretty lucky; they only gave you a warning. You can continue working as if nothing happened. But one more wrong move and you are out.

You flee your job and never look back. You now have a really bad reputation in the mining community; it's a small world, and now you can't find a new job in this field of work. You're depressed and go back to your hometown, where you now work at the local Tim Horton's. Years pass, and you lose any motivation you had left; you start gambling a lot and bet all your savings on a horse race.

The start of the race is great. Thunder is gapping all the other horses, but suddenly, he trips and falls. You lose all your money, can't pay your bill, and you are now homeless. That's not the best, right?

Bet on Fat-Boy the underdog!

Fat-Boy is the last to take off; it's not looking great, all the others' horses are way faster, then Thunder trips and causes lots of chaos, all the other horses trip and Fat-Boy is the last one standing and "running." He won, the odds were so low that you actually obtained generational wealth for your victory, you don't have to work anymore. You can do whatever you want. All the gambling finally pulled off!

You accept the promotion, you are now a supervisor of all the surveying operations at the mine, at first you like it; the pay is better than before, you have more responsibilities, and you feel important. But weeks pass, and you seem to lose interest in it, indeed the job is mostly in the office, and you liked being outside doing real work instead of telling others to do stuff and fill paperwork. After a couple of months, your motivation decreases, and you start to feel a bit depressed.

You don't feel like you're working with the job you have; you politely refuse your boss's offer and keep your job as a surveyor. Your boss is a bit disappointed since he says you have potential, but still, it's your choice. You end up keeping that job for a really long time, you get a wife, children, expenses accumulate, you are just a simple worker, and the salary starts to be a bit low with your lifestyle, you end up regretting not getting that promotion, you would have maybe gotten even higher in the hierarchy with a really good salary. Now you barely make enough, and you cannot stop working since you have a lot of stuff to pay, also your boss never offers you anything better since he sees you as a man with no ambition.

You try pushing through, even with your low morale, you do a great job. Things start to fall into place themselves, and you feel better, you get used to your supervision job and get to know you collegues in the office. You are actually pretty good at managing people, and after some time, you get another promotion, then another, and another... You entered years ago as a surveyor and now your director of operations, you make bank and can work from home with your computer. You made it; you are now a real company man. Job stability and a high salary gave you the ability to get a family and travel the world with them.
