The end of the college era.

With the final exam passed, my heart raced as I finished my paramedic certification. Years of rigorous training, countless sleepless nights, and a lot of simulations had led to this moment. As I walked out of the classroom, emotions swirled within me: relief, pride, and a tinge of nervousness for the challenges ahead. Yet, one thing was clear, I was ready. Ready to rush into the chaos, to save lives, and to make a difference. With determination in my step, I left the school, happy to embark on my journey as a fully-fledged paramedic, answering the call to help others. Now the only thing left for me to do is choose the company I'm going to work for.

On my first day, I went to the operational center ready to attack the first day, when I arrived at the center I had the wonderful surprise of all my superiors and some colleagues who were waiting for me to do a little welcoming ceremony, after a few minutes of discussion with everyone it was time to leave, I had to choose to partner. I had the choice between three people, Guy an old hand, Jeff an old friend whom I hadn't seen for a long time and who had just finished too.

After a few years working for SPLL I was offered a promotion for my good work over the last few years. I had the choice of returning to university to do my master's degree in advanced care while continuing to work part-time or refusing the offer and staying in primary care.

Choice 1 : Go back to school.

Choice 2 : Stay in primary care.

After checking the truck, Jeff and I left for a big day, when we were waiting at our service point, the radio sounded, our first call. The call was for a 37-year-old man who appeared very weak. When we arrived Jeff was in charge of the patient while I was the one who was going to help prepare everything, but the two of us agreed on the patient's condition that he was low in sugar in his blood. So to remedy this, I suggested giving him a gel solution filled with sugar according to the protocols. But Jeff didn't agree with my suggestion. I had two options available to me.

Choice 1 : Follow Jeff's choice and say nothing.

Choice 2 : Confront Jeff and gently make him understand the protocols to follow.

I've been working with Guy for a while now. I had him in one of my internships. He was a good guy, so we got along well until now. Today I wasn't feeling well but I still came to work, I'm wondering if I should tell him about it or not since it could affect my work.

Choice 1 : explain to him what my situation is.

Go back to school.

Now that I'm back at school, I've already done a few basic courses which weren't very difficult but now that I'm getting to the heart of the matter I'm finding it more and more difficult and I'm questioning myself more and more if I give up and go back to primary care or if I continue and give it my all to finish.

Choice 1 : Give up.

Choice 2 : I decided to stay.

Following Jeff's decision, the procedure went well. Following this I asked him why he wanted to choose not to give him any of the sugar gel and he replied that he didn't know what to do at that precise moment and that his ego was too big to admit that I was right. I wasn't happy, so I asked to change partners and they put me with Zack. It wasn't any better with him either, he always wanted to do nothing and delegated all the tasks to me, unfortunately, I couldn't change, so I had to get used to it and I couldn't enjoy my beginnings properly.

After explaining to Jeff the protocol for the sugar gel, the entire procedure went well and the patient was returned to the hospital safe and sound. Afterwards, I continued to work with Jeff for a long time and we got along well for several years.

So when I met my partner I took him aside to talk to him about my situation, I explained to him that things weren't going very well with my brother and we argued very loudly last night. he understood and we went back to our work for the rest of the day when he saw that I was not doing well, he took control of the intervention with the patient and the day ended well.

As soon as I saw my partner I put a smile back on my face and kept my problem to myself. the day passes and the more calls we have the more difficulty I have in concentrating on my decisions my colleague doesn't notice it, until the moment I make a bad decision that is vital for the patient, and he notices it but doesn't say anything for the moment the call ends and he starts to scold me for what I did, at that very moment I burst into tears and suddenly Guy stops and looks at me and wonders why I'm crying and so I explain to him the problem with my brother and he starts lecturing me that I shouldn't keep problems to myself, especially in our profession and go get help instead.

Stay in primary care.

After deciding to continue in primary care I continued my good work and became an operations supervisor, and friends every day I see advanced care and I wonder what I would have experienced if I had decided to become like them.

I decided to continue at university by giving it all my heart, I spent days and nights studying to be the best, and I ended up finishing the master's degree. So I returned to the company with a smile on my face full of pride, I now had two choices available to me to continue as a paramedic in primary care, but with more knowledge or to pursue a new career in primary care as a paramedic in advanced care.

Choice 1 : Continue as a paramedic in primary care.

Choice 2 : Continue as an advanced care paramedic.

I therefore continued as a paramedic in primary care but with more knowledge and a better understanding of medicine which made me a better paramedic, to the advantage of my studies my superior was promoted to internship supervisor, so it was my turn to train the interns.

So I took the path of creating a new career as a paramedic in advanced care, from my first day they announced to me that I had the right to my truck with my equipment and I could choose the calls that I considered important to have greater possibilities of care for the patient. so I stayed in advanced care for years and I finished my career in advanced care.
