Take a year off.

After much discussion with my parents, I have finally taken a year off. However, I need to know what will be in my best interest during this time. Should I gain more experience by working in a law firm or focus on my online business to increase my earnings?

Choice 1 : Work at a law firm.

Choice 2 : Focus on my online business.

dilemma

Go to the university.

I have made the decision to pursue a degree in business law at the university level. However, I am unsure whether it would be more beneficial for me to be at the University of Ottawa, or stay in Montreal and attend the University of Montreal.

Choice 1 : University of Ottawa.

Choice 2 : University of Montreal.

What University to choose

Work at a law firm.

I have decided to work at a law firm to gain more experience, although I am aware that the demand for work is high while the offers are low. Also, I am facing a big dilemma because as a paralegal I would like to apply either on criminal law or business law. What should I choose?

Choice 1 : Work in criminal law.

Choice 2 : Work at Business law.

Law firm

Work in criminal law.

I was hired at the DPCD, an organization that is responsible for authorizing and directing criminal and penal prosecutions on behalf of the Quebec State. My first experience as a paralegal was great, as I received on- the- job training for two weeks to learn the ropes, such as regulation and legal research. However, after more than three months I realized that criminal law was not the area I wanted to specialize in. It can be overwhelming and requires excellent time management skills to finish all the necessary paperwork before the trial. Beside that, The work environment is great, everyone is very friendly but the most important aspect is getting the work done.

DPCD

Work at Business law.

I was hired as an intern at one of the biggest law firms in Montreal Fasken in business law. Luckily for me there is a vacant position as a paralegal. The HR took the time to get to know me better by conducting a background check and asking about my interest in the firm. When I arrived, like in any job, I had a thorough on-the-job training to specialize in mortgage law. At the beginning, I had a lot of tedious tasks such as reading the laws and all the regulations, conducting legal research or sometimes completing the paperwork. After three months of working, it became easier for me to complete tasks, and I loved it. As a result, I received a premium wage. Even so during this time I was not comfortable to be there. There was conflict politics, about how people were dodging other people, or they were just minding their own business without really being nice. Well, even though I had the money during this time.

Start drop shipping.

My friends and I decided to start drop shipping. Our plan was too first evaluate the market based on our target audience. Then, we needed to find a reliable supplier for our products. We researched potential suppliers by looking at their ratings and reviews, or by reaching out to manufacturers directly to establish a relationship with them. Once we set up our online store, we promoted our products. It took us 3-6 months to build our company. Initially, it was challenging to promoting our products, but with the network we established, it became easier. Within 2 months, we made a total profit of $12,000 in sales and $20,000 in revenue. However, as the market changed, our product became less popular with buyers, resulting in lower profits. Unfortunately, we were unable to adapt to the changing market and eventually had to close our business. I learn a lot and this is just the beginning.

Invest on cryptocurrency.

I recently decided to start investing in cryptocurrency after a friend introduced me to it a few months ago. As someone with experience in trading futures, I was intrigued by the potential of DeFi (decentralized finance) for long-term investments. However, before diving in, I spent 3-4 months familiarizing myself with the world of cryptocurrency, learning key terms and technical tools, and working on my psychological readiness to face the volatile market. Once I felt prepared, I opened the main exchange platform and 3-4 wallets to diversify my investments and profits. Fortunately, the market was in a bull-run phase, which resulted in a profit of approximately $20,000. However, as a beginner, I did make some losses and am still working on becoming more efficient in my investments.

University of Ottawa.

I believed it was in my best interest to attend an English-speaking university, as being bilinguals is a significant advantage in the job market, especially for federal positions where it could increase your wage. I was aware that it would not be easy, as I needed to improve my English skills by 3-4 levels from where I was in Montreal. A friend recommended that I take English courses to become more proficient. After three years of studying business law, I received my diploma. Despite the long hours I put in school, and the challenges of understanding the laws and regulations. I am proud to say that it was all worthwhile.

University of Montreal.

I decided to apply to the University of Montreal, but because of my lack of work in the CEGEP and my low grades, I was not accepted. People undermined me, saying that I wouldn't be able to achieve my goal. I took it personally and decided to take a certificate in law, which is a program designed to boost my grades. After a year and a half, I finally had the grades to enter. However, during my first year, I realized that I wanted to explore opportunities outside of the province and move to a different city. I discussed this with my friends and family, and they suggested that I attended the University of Ottawa. They believed that this would allow me to experience both the French and English worlds. Then, I chose to attend the University of Ottawa.
