Life-choices: MIT Dead-end job.

High school.

It was the end of high school. I was a student at Villa Maria High School. I wasn’t sure what to do next. Nevertheless, two choices were available to me.

Choice 1 : Go to Ahuntsic College and study Diagnostic Imaging Technology.

Choice 2 : Apply for a dead-end job like cashier at Couche-Tard and earn a minimum wage.

Villa Maria High school

Go to Ahuntsic College and study Diagnostic Imaging Technology.

I decided to go to Ahuntsic College. I didn’t get straight A’s. In some of my courses, I did a cursory job. But because of my time management skills, I was able to pull off a passing grade in all of my courses. After 4 great years, I graduated from Ahuntsic College. Now, I can apply for a job that will lead me to a career as a medical imaging technologist.

Choice 1 : Apply to a public hospital

Choice 2 : Apply to a private clinic

Choice 3 : Apply for an internship.

Ahuntsic College

Apply to a private clinic.

It has always been my dream to work in a private clinic. I am now officially a trainee, and I am doing my on-the-job training so that I can learn the ropes. The nice woman at HR has asked me where I want to work next. Neither position comes with a premium wage. I can’t make up my mind. Which should I choose?

Choice 1 : Hull Hospital

Choice 2 : Imagerie des Pionniers

Biron Imagix Radiology Center

Hull Hospital.

I chose the first of the two options. Now, I am a medical imaging technologist at the Hull Hospital in Gatineau. This job requires overtime and a good knowledge of English. Luckily, everything I learned in my college English courses will come in handy while talking with Anglophones. Despite, the office politics, I try not to get sucked up in their dramas and office intrigues. After a difficult day at work filled with drudgery and alienation, my boss asked for some advice. I said, “If I were you, I would”.

Choice 1 : Appoint a replacement director and take time off from work to go on a trip with my wife and children.

Choice 2 : Fire everyone that bothers me. That was very bad advice because I got fired the same day.

Gatineau Hospital

Apply for a dead-end job like cashier at Couche-Tard and earn a minimum wage.

I have decided to apply in a convenience store which is Couche-Tard. I am working behind the cash register. This job is so exhausted and boring at the same time. They pay me $15 an hour. I am always asking myself why I didn't go to college to get another diploma. What should I do?

Choice 1 : Continue and retired broke.

Choice 2 : Go back to school.

Couche-Tard

Apply for an internship.

During my last semester of college in the Diagnostic Imaging Program Technology, we were required to apply for an internship. I applied to the CHUM in Downtown Montreal and to St-Mary’s Hospital. I got offered both internships. Which one should I choose?

Choice 1 : Accept the CHUM internship.

Choice 2 : Accept the St-Mary internship.

CT scan

Accept the CHUM internship.

Everything was going well. Suddenly, the boss was really friendly, maybe too much. Sometimes, he was putting his hands on my shoulders. I was totally shocked. It has turned into a sexual harassment. I didn’t know what to do to get out this weird situation. What should I do? I was extremely sad because I knew that I would lose the chance to develop my medical imaging technologist skills.

Choice 1 : Contact the HR, and tell them what’s going on here.

Choice 2 : Ignore the boss in order to complete the internship.

CHUM

Accept the St-Mary internship.

Everything went well until a random medical imaging technologist has started flirting with me. I couldn’t believe it! I was only there to complete my internship. He kept going on with the flirtation almost until I was done. Should I?

Choice 1 : Date him?

Choice 2 : Push him away?

St-Mary Hospital

Contact the HR, and tell them what’s going on over here.

I was obligated to contact the HR. This situation was too embarrassing. Vanessa, the HR woman was so nice and kind! She decided to report him. He was immediately suspended. When he saw me, he started yelling. I felt like a part of a horror movie. He even threatened me. What should I do?

Choice 1 : Put him on camera in order to have a back up.

Choice 2 : Just let it be.

HR

Ignore the boss in order to complete the internship.

So, I decided to just ignore him. I have completed my internship a month later. Before leaving the place, after receiving my letter of recommendation, I told him that he wasn’t right to act like that. Now, I am absolutely ready to use my skills as an insane medical imaging technologist. Where should I work?

Choice 1 : Gatineau Hospital.

Choice 2 : Radiologix Fabreville.

Medical director

Apply to a public hospital.

I applied at the Santa Cabrini Hospital. The situation is so sad over here. There’s only the basic medical imaging equipment. I can’t stay there! What should I do?

Choice 1 : Hull Hospital.

Choice 2 : Accept the CHUM internship.

Radiology machine

Continue and retired broke.

So, I decided to stay at Couche-Tard. I’m doing that 9 to 5 shift 6 days per week. I’m feeling like a real loser. Now, I know that it wasn’t the right decision. I might retire with an empty bank account if that continues. What should I do?

Choice 1 : Go to Ahuntsic College and study Diagnostic Imaging Technology.

Choice 2 : Apply to a private clinic.

Cashier

Gatineau Hospital.

I’m working at the Gatineau Hospital now. I like it so much! All my coworkers are awesome! It’s a really new beginning for me. I’m so far away from Montreal and my family. What should I do next?
