How to find a career in Social Work field?

Introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Mathilde and I have been in Social Science program for 2 years. Next year, I will start university in Social Workers program. This program is about understanding the practice of Social Work, a profession that aims to promote social change through the satisfaction of needs and aspirations as well as an active contribution to the resolution of social problems, with a view to the emancipation of individuals, groups, and communities. By this one, a Social Worker will be able to help people through their social and family environments and during their personal development.

When you want to do a particular job, whether it's Social Work or not, we all have the same goal, which is to succeed in our studies and reach the profession that we are passionate about, right? Obviously yes! However, sometimes it can seem difficult to know where to start looking for information about the program.

I specify that I am not a Social Work expert, but I have done a lot of research on the subject, which allows me to lead others in the same program.

Also, I work for an organization that helps people with intellectual disabilities and autism disorders, which allows me to have a certain basis in the field of social intervention.

If a student goes into a Social Work program without knowing specifically the job description or the main tasks of a Social Worker or the different possible places to practice the profession, he may not be able to perform well in his studies and in his career since he will not have explored the different options available for him.

For example, imagine that you want to become a Social Worker in hospitals, but you study the training of a Social Worker specialized in the protection of children, you will not have the necessary training for your career and therefore, you will exercise your job without responding to the needs of the right group of people.

1. Open your browser (Google, Safari, etc.) to the search bar.

3. Hit the button enter to open the tab.

On the Website :

In the top left corner of the screen, you will see a logo of the Government of Quebec followed below by another logo written Social Workers.

In the top right corner of the screen, you will see a magnifying glass icon, which allows you to search into the website. Also, next to it, there is an option to turn the website into French.

On the left-hand side of the screen, there will be the navigation menu. You can click on the different options (Job description, Hourly wage, Job prospects for 2022-2026, Sectors of activity, Training and requirements, etc.). It will go directly to the section you click on it.

On the right-hand side of the screen, there will be the scroll bar. By taking it, you will have access to the text area of all of the options of the navigation bar.

When you scroll to the bottom of the page, in the bottom left corner of the screen, you will see a link leading to a glossary of words related to Social Work and another link to the jobs available in Quebec related to the profession.

Below these links, at the bottom of screen in the middle, there will be the personal information of the site of the Government of Quebec.

The Solution

First of all, to find the field in Social Work, which is the most suitable for the person, it is important for the student to consult the heading "Job description". Through this, he will observe all the possibles work environments for a potential Social Worker and therefore choose what interests him the most for his career.

For those of you who don't know, the possible work environments for a Social Worker can be hospitals, school centers, social service agencies, child protection services, correctional facilities, community organizations, employee assistance programs, aboriginal Band Councils and private environments.

Then, in the "Main tasks" section, the student will see what a Social Worker must be able to do on a daily basis to help his clients. Thus, depending on the tasks that interest him the most, he will confirm or not the work environment that he has chosen for his future.
