I have been studying Pre-Hospital Emergency Care at Ahuntsic College for 2 years now. I chose this field of study because I love to expect the unexpected and to take on the challenges that life throws at me.

Studying in the medical field comes with great challenges. The academic courses are thorough, and contains a great extend of useful information to challenge us into becoming fast learners. Studying in the medical field can be overwhelming only by remembering all of the medical terms that we have to use and understand to be a great emergency worker.

If you have Dyslexia like I do, having to remember a great deal of acronyms and long words with complicated pronunciations can be horrifying. Becoming a Paramedic is not an easy task although having some tools to help us succeed can be a good way to make our life easier.

My goal is to demonstrate the benefits of having a personal field-related glossary when you have to learn with Dyslexia and pronunciation challenges.

The main problem with pronunciation errors and misunderstanding the meaning of certain terms is that it can lead to important medical malpractices.

For example, the acronym STEMI and IAMEST mean the same thing but one is French and one is English. It means severe heart attack. If you are not familiar with the other appellations a word can take, it can be dangerous later on in your intervention. As I am sure you know, they are many other acronyms that we will have to quickly identify in order to excel in our job but how can we keep up and remember all of them?

Hopefully, the purpose of today's short learning video is to show you a unique website that will help you with those challenges.

Let me introduce you to the Virtual Writing Tutor website. To maximize your understanding I will demonstrate as I speak. Before we begin, make sure that you have a working internet connection. To access the website you will have to open the default browser of your computer. It can be Safari, Chrome or Internet Explorer it does not matter.

Once the web page is open, you enter the domain name "VirtualWritingTutor.com" into the address bar at the top of the screen. Press ENTER on your computer keyboard. The browser will create a uniform resource locator (URL) and will take you to the website.

As you can see, there are bunches of tools that we can use.

At the top of screen in the middle, you have the navigation menu where you can find tools to create all sorts of useful project such as the hypertext narrative creator or the job interviews script creator.
In the middle of the screen, you have the text area where you can enter your text and choose what you want to check suck as grammar, and punctuation mistakes.
On the right-hand side of the screen, you have the scroll bar to help you navigate on the website.

Now here is where you want to go to find the solution to the specific problem I mentioned before.

Click on the writing tools button at the top of screen in the middle, scroll down, and click on the glossary creator link.

This tool is incredibly helpful because it allows you to create a little dictionary of your own with the description of the word, the possible translation it can have, its pronunciation and some example on how to use it correctly. I created my own glossary with all the medical terms I was not able to remember or to correctly pronounce.

This glossary is really easy to set up. You give it a title in the text area provided for it and click on the submit button named new glossary.

It will bring you to the editing page of your glossary where you can fill all the different text areas as indicated. You can add pictures, descriptions, examples, translations and even generate an audio pronunciation of the word you want to practice.

When you are finished, click on the publish button in the top right corner of the screen and your glossary is ready for use! You can modify any information at anytime by going back to the editing page.

So, if you have a learning disability like me, and you are looking for some tools to help you with your memory, and your pronunciation just go create your own glossary and I promise you that you will see the difference in your learning process.
