How to use the Virtual Writing Tutor website for your field of study

Introduction

Hi, my name is Sarah Graton and I’m a paramedic student at Ahuntsic College. To become a paramedic, the name of the three-year program you need to accomplish is "Pre-Hospital Emergency Care". I’ve been studying in this field for 3 years, and I’ll be done next year. In this program, we are learning a lot about the human body and the pathologies associated with it. The different courses can be really useful, even if you don't want to be a paramedic at the end.

In our society, not a lot of people know how to reanimate or the minimum knowledge about their bodies. If we look at the statistics, eight cardiac arrests on ten happens in a house or at a public area. But if we look deeper, only one on ten survive. It is shocking right? The chances of surviving can increase by two if a witness performs CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) quickly. Don't you think it would be useful to know more about those techniques and the way our body works?

Even I, before my classes, didn't know about any of this, and I wouldn't have been helpful in any situations. People would talk to me about certain things, and I would be completely lost. But now, I'm really happy to tell you that I have improve so much and that I can actually make the difference in someone life. We are all in this together and each of us can make the difference.

Like I said before, I've been in the program for three years. If everything goes well, I will be done next year.

My goal is to show you how to use the Virtual Writing Tutor, so you can learn the vocabulary you need to understand the medical field. Like this, even if you're not a paramedic or a health care worker, you can understand the directives and maybe help someone.

What I want you to do is to watch my video, learn how to use the website, and use it as much as you can! Also, you can explore it to find other useful tools.

The Problem

Particularly in Montreal, English is a very used language. It can occur that you meet somebody who only speaks English.

If you don't know any words about the medical field, in French or in English, you won't be able to help someone if any problem occurs.

For example, you want to help a man who's laying on the floor, but the person only speaks in English and you only in French... You won't be able to understand him and help him. It's essential to know the basic vocabulary and the basic words about the body parts or pathologies so you can talk about that with him.

I'm going to show you how to use the website to find the vocabulary for a specific field of study.

The Quest

First of all, you need to open your internet browser. Type the URL: virtualwritingtutor.com into the address bar, and hit enter.

As you can see in the top left corner of your screen, there's the logo. You can click on it at any time to return to the home page. In the top right corner of your screen, there're different social media for you to share the website. Next step, in the middle of your screen, there's a blue bar called the navigation menu. You need to click on "Writing tools". After that, click on the third one named "Glossary Creator".
