Hello. My name is Charles-Éric Côté, and I am a student of 20 years old. I have been studying Police Technology at the College Ahuntsic for 3 years, and if all go well, I will be a policeman in a few months.
In fact, I am finishing my 3 years program in four weeks. After that, I will have to go to the National Police School. During my program, I learn a lot of theoretical knowledge on different laws, on people with mental illness, on some investigation techniques and on how to communicate with different people.
After I graduate from the police school, I will have to chose where I want to work. For now, I want to work for the SPVM, the "service de police de la ville de Montréal".
However, in Montreal, there are a lot of English speakers and I will certainly have to talk to some. I consider myself as someone who can manage to speak English but as a policeman, there are a lot of field related words and I do not want to seem unprofessional by not being able to tell them in English.
If I am not able to explain correctly the following procedures to an English speaker or if I can not tell him clearly what I want him to do I lose all credibility but more important, there is a risk that the English speaker does not understand what he has to do.
For example, imagine that I put under arrest an English speaker who has entered into a building illegally with intent to commit a crime. When I put him under arrest it is really important to tell him his right but I also to tell him the reason I arrest him.
If I am not really good with the police vocabulary, I could say : You are under arrest for robbery. However, I should say : You are under arrest for burglary.
Robbery and burglary are two similar terms, but they represent two different infractions and making such a mistake can be really damaging in court.
To prevent error like this, I am going to show you a website that can help a policeman to learn some field related words.
First, open your browser. Type this URL Virtual writing tutor dot com into the address bar and hit enter. If you typed the URL correctly, you will see this page.
In the top left corner of the screen, you will see a logo and underneath it the navigation menu. On the right-hand side of the navigation menu, you can see the login link. Click on it to login. After you have logged in, you will put your cursor in the middle of the navigation menu, on the words "writing tools" and click on it. Then, you will see a drop-down menu with some link. On that list, you will see the words "Glossary Creator". Click the link.
Now here is where you can create a glossary to help you solve the problem I mentioned before.
In the middle of the screen, you will see two buttons. The first button says "video tutorial". The second button says "examples". Those two buttons can help you do your own glossary.
Under these buttons, on the right-hand side of the screen, you will see an input box and a submit button labelled "New Glossary". Type in the input box the name of your glossary and click on the submit button.
Now you see on the left-hand side of the screen the title Editor. Under it there are different sections where you can add a few sentences by clicking on the edit icon. Every time you click on an edit icon you can see that under the text area, there are three buttons. To check your grammar and your spelling, click on the "Check Grammar" button. To close the pop-up box and save your text, click on the "save" button.
At the bottom of the screen, in the middle, there is an "add term" button. Every time you want to add a term click on that button and others sections will appear.
When you are finished, you can see a preview of your glossary on the right-hand side of the screen. Then, you can publish it by clicking on the publish button at the top of the preview.
Now that your glossary is publish, you can see it by clicking again on the "Writing tools" drop-down menu and then the glossary link.
You can see on the left-hand side of the screen the title "My glossary" with the title of the glossary you created. Click your glossary's link to open it on a new tab.
You can also play a card game with the words you put in your glossary and practice with the vocabulary matching exercise. You just have to go at the bottom of the screen in the middle and click on the card game link or on the vocabulary matching exercise link.
So, if you are a policeman, and you don't want to look unprofessional or you don't want to do damaging errors, just use the Glossary creator.
