Hi everyone my name is Gaele
And I have been studying in Natural Sciences at Montmorency College for over a year now. In this program we mainly learn maths, chemistry, biology, and physics. Having a degree in Natural Sciences is very useful because it lets you major in whatever you want in university. Personally, I'm thinking of going to law school.
Lawyers often need to know many laws, do lots of research, and stay up to date on the new decisions that are taken in court
Unfortunately, there is a lot of paperwork to go through and too many things to remember at once.
For example, your client got his property damaged by a fire, you need to find laws that work in his favor as well as other cases that are similar to his to present to the judge the other judges' decisions.
I will then present to you a website that is very useful for that kind of research.
First, type in canlii.org in your search bar.
In the top right corner, you can choose what language you want the site to be in, either French or English
Right to the left of it, you can find the sign in button
In the top left corner, you can find the logo
Right under it, there are three different search bars.
At the end of each search bar there's a question mark. Clicking on it will show a text that explains how to use the search bar.
In the middle of the screen, under the search bars, there's the primary law section where you can choose which province or territory's law you want to look at.
After scrolling down a bit using the scroll bar, you can find the commentary section. This section displays the most recent commentaries that are written by legal scholars, lawyers or other legal authors. You can also find the can lii blog section where it displays can lii's most recent updates. Both of these sections will be present in the middle of the screen.
Finally, if you scroll down further, you can find the official law sites of each province, territory or even the federal.
For our problem we'll be interested in using the first search bar. You simply have to search up keywords. For the example I gave earlier, we can search up the word fire. As you can see, there are 4 categories that show up. The 1st one is the 3 others combined. The second one shows past cases that include the word fire in their report, and of course you can use filters to choose the province or territory, the court or tribunal, the date, and the subject. The 3rd one shows actual laws with the word fire in them. You can use filters to choose the province or territory, the type of law, and the version of the law that you want. Finally, the 4th one shows commentary, with the word fire in them, written by professionals to explain legal concepts, analyze court decisions, and discuss how laws should be interpreted. For this one, you can use filters to choose the subject, the type, the publication year, and the source.
Thank you all for listening. I hope you enjoyed this video and that it was useful. If you did please like and subscribe. Thank youu.
