How to Protect Yourself from Suspicious Links

Introduction

Hi everyone and welcome to my channel. My name is Jean-Deric and I study at Collège Montmorency in Laval. My program is called Computer science Technology and there we focus on network and security

Today, suspicious emails and messages get sent almost every day. Phishing links are one of the most common Cyberattack. Phishing is when a someone pretends to be someone you trust, like your bank for example, to trick you into clicking a link so, you can enter your credential. Anyone can fall for it if they are not careful.

Despite me studying in computer science, if I'm not careful, even I could fall for it. That's why I'm learning new things every day, and I want to share something useful with you guys

Currently, I'm in my third semester in this program, and I already have a DEP in computer support. Some of the courses I have taken so far or that I am taking are Java programming, Databases, Network infrastructure, Security and Ethics and Windows. After graduation, I could become a network administrator, a technical support specialist or even a security consultant. My goal currently is to become a Cybersecurity Engineer.

So, I'm going to record my screen with a microphone and show you a tour on this website called VirusTotal to learn how to scan for possible suspicious links or files.

Watch this who video for instructions to know exactly how to protect yourself.

You'll see this free tool that a lot of technicians use when dealing with a suspicious link.

The Problem

So, you're at work and as an employee, you receive an email from someone with the name of your boss with a weird link and icons at the end of the message. If you put your mouse on the link, the real URL will show in the bottom left corner of the screen.

If you were to left-click that link, it could be a normal website, but chances are, it isn't, and you could infect the whole company's network. As a result, private data could get stolen.

For example, an email has a link called "mikrosoft.com" Should you open it?

So, in this video I will show you how to verify if a link is safe with VirusTotal

The Quest

To get to the website, open on your browser a new tab and type with your keyboard "virustotal.com" in the search bar at the top of the screen in the middle then hit enter.

There's a couple of option you can choose on the website, but I'll focus on the one you'll actually use. At the top left of the screen, there's the logo which will make you come back in the main page. Beside it there's a navigation menu, a search bar to enter links, then there's an upload button for files. The same options are also there in the middle of the page. There's a sign in and sign up button if you want to create an account at the corner of the screen. Finally there's an assistant in the bottom right corner if you need help. At the bottom of the screen in the middle if you scroll down, there's a footer with useful info

The Solution

To enter your suspicious address, either type it in at the top in the text area, or in the middle, choose URL and then type the URL in the address bar and click search. There's another useful option to verify if a file is suspicious too. Just click the "file" option in the middle of the screen and click the button "choose file". Then, you'll be able to see if you're URL or file is safe or not.

The Conclusion

So in conclusion, if you even encounter a suspicious link, this is how you verify it.
