Many students in dentistry programs around the world face the same challenge: writing medical explanations clearly in English. Because dentistry uses a lot of technical vocabulary, it can be difficult for students to express their ideas correctly.
Even though I am still improving my English, I also face this challenge when writing definitions or explanations for my dentistry courses. Sometimes I make grammar or spelling mistakes when using medical terms.
As a dentistry student, I regularly study topics related to oral health, dental treatments, and patient care. This means I often have to write explanations about teeth, gums, and dental procedures.
My goal in this screencast is to show you a simple and useful tool that dentistry students can use to improve their medical English writing.
By the end of this video, I hope you will try this tool yourself and use it to check your grammar and vocabulary when writing about dentistry.
But first, let’s understand why writing medical English can be difficult for dentistry students.
In dentistry programs, students often need to write reports, assignments, and definitions using professional vocabulary. These texts must be clear and accurate because they describe medical information.
If students make grammar mistakes or spelling errors, their explanations may become confusing. This can make their work look less professional and may even cause misunderstandings when communicating medical information.
For example, a dentistry student might write a definition about braces, oral hygiene, or dental treatment. However, if the sentence contains grammar errors or incorrect vocabulary, the meaning may not be clear.
Fortunately, there is a helpful website that can assist students with correcting their writing. In the next part of this screencast, I will show you how to use a tool called VirtualWritingTutor.
To begin, open your internet browser. In the address bar, type virtualwritingtutor.com, and press enter. This will take you to the VirtualWritingTutor website.
On the homepage, you will see a large text box where you can write or paste your text. Above the text box, there are several tools available, including the Grammar Checker, which analyzes your writing and helps you find mistakes. This website is designed to help students improve their grammar, spelling, and vocabulary.
Now I will demonstrate how this tool can help dentistry students improve their writing.
First, write or copy a sentence related to dentistry. For example:
“Braces are devices used to straighten teeth and improve oral health.”
Next, copy the sentence.
Then paste the sentence into the text box on the VirtualWritingTutor website.
After that, click the Check Grammar button.
The website will analyze the sentence and highlight any grammar or spelling mistakes. It will also suggest corrections to help improve the sentence.
By using this tool, dentistry students can learn how to write clearer and more accurate explanations. This is very helpful when writing assignments, reports, or definitions related to dental care.
