Hi everyone and welcome back to my Youtube channel. If you are new here, my name is Sahar. I am a nursing student, in my second year of college. For those of you who don't know about nursing, I will just explain what this program involves. It is a program given in 3 years in college. We take courses in psychology which teaches us how to act with patient with different backgrounds, or with a patient with a hard temperament. We also have internships, twice per semester. It teaches us how to react when we face the problems we have learned about in class, in theory.
I am for sure, not an expert because I am still a student, but I have done a lot of research lately on the subject to give you guys the right information.
As a nurse, as a nursing student we will face different problems. The one, I will address in this video is the language barrier. We are living in a time, where immigration is more and more important than ever. But we also don't speak all the languages on earth. I just want to mention, sometimes, "Google Translate" can be inaccurate, it is not a recommended tool for college homework, but it is free, easy to use when you want to be efficient.
If we don't get what is wrong with the patient's health, the patient's health might get worse and worse. In emergency cases, we could lose the patient because of a language barrier.
Imagine that you have a patient trying to tell that he has pain on his chest, that could possibly be a heart attack, but you can't help him because you don't understand what he is saying.
It can be difficult to think that we just lost a patient because we could not understand them because of a language. But don't worry. I have found the perfect solution. In the following minutes, I will show you exactly how to avoid this situation.
First, open your browser. Type this URL: https://translate.google.com/?sl=en&tl=fr&op=translate&hl=fr into the address bar and hit enter. If you typed the URL correctly, you will see this page
Under the bookmark bar, you will see the settings menu, to his right, there will be the logo of the website. Under the website's logo there is the navigation menu. In the bottom left corner of the left text area, there is the microphone. In the top left corner of the screen, under the navigation menu is the language in which your patient speaks. And on the top of the right text area, you choose the language that you want your patient's words be translated in. In the bottom right corner of the left text area, there is an accordion button.
Now press on the microphone in the text area and hand the phone to your patient and tell them to say everything they have to say about their health condition, once they are done, take it back and look what they mean and what they need. If you prefer you can also let them tape what they have to say in their language and you look at the translation once they are done.
So, if you are in nursing or a related field, that is how you overcome the problem of the language barrier.
Thank you for watching, I hope that was useful to you and don't forget to subscribe to my Youtube channel so that you don't miss my upcoming videos.
