Upon completion of this program, I will receive a diploma that will qualify me to work as a respiratory therapist. However, this role involves a wide range of tasks and responsibilities. A respiratory therapist is a healthcare professional who specializes in assessing, treating, and maintaining patients' cardiorespiratory functions. While they primarily work in hospitals, they may also provide home care and visit long-term care facilities.

As a respiratory therapist, you may encounter a common issue in the emergency room: a COPD patient who speaks English comes in for a consultation. COPD is a progressive, preventable, and treatable lung disease that causes a permanent obstruction of the airways. However, your protocol for COPD patients is in French, which poses a challenge. In order to effectively communicate with your patient and ensure their understanding of their illness, you will need to translate the protocol into English.

You will need to explain the protocol to the patient as you perform it to build their trust and ensure they understand their illness. Therefore, if you cannot do this because your protocol is not translated, it could affect the clarity of your explanations and cause him anxiety.
