For those of you who don’t know, I’m currently studying in the Civil Engineering Technology program.
This program teaches us how to design, plan, and supervise construction projects like bridges, roads, and buildings.
We take courses in surveying, materials testing, soil mechanics, structural analysis, and computer-aided design.
After graduation, we can work as civil engineering technologists, helping engineers make sure that structures are strong, safe, and efficient.
One challenge in this field is writing clear and professional technical reports.
As future civil engineering technologists, we need to communicate with engineers, contractors, and clients, so grammar and precision really matter.
Even small mistakes in written communication can cause confusion or delay projects.
Luckily, there’s a great website that can help us solve this problem it’s called VirtualWritingTutor.com.
It’s a free online grammar checker and writing assistant that helps students improve their English writing skills.
You can find it easily by typing “Virtual Writing Tutor” into Google or going directly to virtualwritingtutor.com.
In the top right corner there the logo. Just under the logo, there is the navigation menu.
You'll see a big text area in the middle of the page, where you actually write the text you want to checkout. The tools are clearly marked in the menu at the top.
To check your writing, just paste your text into the box and click the "Check Grammar" button. The system then looks at your text and highlights possible mistakes with different colors: red for spelling errors, blue for grammar problems, and green for styling suggestions.
Let’s try an example.
Imagine I have to write a short report about a concrete strength test we did in the lab.
I’ll paste my paragraph into the Virtual Writing Tutor text box.
- "During our concrete compression test. We collected datas from three different samples to compare their resistance. The results show that the concrete with more water had a lower strength."
Now, I click “Check Grammar” and it shows me that I wrote “datas” instead of “data,” .
I make those corrections right away and now my paragraph have no mistake.
Next, I can use the "Improve Writing" tools to make sure my sentences are clear and well-connected.
