My goal today is to show you how to use BioRender, an online platform that makes it easy to create beautiful, scientifically accurate diagrams—especially for things like the cell membrane and molecular transport.

In biology, especially during our first semesters, we’re expected to understand very complex systems—like the structure of the cell membrane and the types of transport that happen across it. These topics often come up in exams, lab reports, and class discussions. But the diagrams in textbooks can be confusing, and drawing them by hand isn’t always accurate.
If we don’t fully understand these processes—or worse, if we misrepresent them in drawings—we can lose marks on assignments, misunderstand how the body works, and struggle in future courses like physiology or molecular biology.
For example, I remember a quiz where I had to label parts of the membrane and explain how facilitated diffusion and active transport worked. I understood the theory, but my drawing was unclear and I missed important details like protein channels or the direction of water flow in osmosis.
That’s why, in the next part of this screencast, I’ll show you how to solve this problem by using BioRender, a simple but powerful website that helps you create clear, professional biological diagrams—even if you’re not good at drawing!
To get started, simply go to www.biorender.com.
If it’s your first time, you can create a free account using your email. The basic version gives you access to hundreds of icons, which is more than enough for biology classes.
Once you're signed in, click on “New Figure” at the top right of the dashboard to start a new diagram.
On the left side of your screen, you’ll find the icon library. This is where you can search for biological elements like “phospholipid bilayer”, “membrane proteins”, or “ATP”.
In the center, you have your canvas, where you’ll drag and drop the icons to build your figure.
At the top, you have tools to add text boxes, arrows, shapes, and labels.
And finally, on the right, you can change colors, adjust sizes, or arrange the layers of your diagram.
It’s a clean, user-friendly interface—perfect for science students like us.
Let me show you how BioRender helps me understand the cell membrane.
I start by searching for the phospholipid bilayer, which is the double layer that forms the membrane.
It’s made of phospholipids—molecules with a water-loving head and a water-hating tail—that create a barrier around the cell.
Then I add protein channels, ATP pumps, and water molecules to show diffusion, active transport, and osmosis.
It’s fast, visual, and way clearer than a hand-drawn diagram—and it helps me understand each process step by step.
