Hello everyone! My name is Wafaa Labzae, and I'm currently studying Electrical Engineering - Automation and Control at Ahuntsic College. I have been in this program for five semesters, and I have learned a lot about control systems, PLC programming, robotics, and industrial electrical design. One of the most important tools we use is AutoCAD Electrical, which helps us design professional electrical schematics and panel layouts. This software helps realize projects more easily and quickly, using the right components.
We all want to succeed in our field. But learning a technical software like AutoCAD Electrical can be confusing at first. I’ve been there! That’s why I’m excited to guide you today. This tool is essential in automation, control, and design.
When I first opened the software, I was overwhelmed by all the options. The teacher gave a push, but I had to explore on my own. After a few tries, I felt more confident and improved because I have been curious to use it perfectly in my lab works.
I recently started a 75-hour internship where I used AutoCAD to solve a robotic issue. I measured and designed a robot vacuum that grips boxes, and my drawing helped the company reproduce the same design.
My goal is to explain how AutoCAD Electrical works. I’ll demonstrate key tools and features.
In just a few minutes, I’ll show you how to use AutoCAD Electrical step by step.

Let me explain the problem. When you study or work in electrical engineering, you can’t just draw diagrams any way you want. You have to follow official standards like the ISA standard for instrumentation and symbols. In Canada, there are specific rules we must follow in technical drawings, so we need the right tools to create clear and professional diagrams.
If you don’t respect those norms, another technician might not understand your work, and might make a mistake during troubleshoot. That can cause safety problems, wrong connections, or wasted time.
For example, suppose you need to design a control panel for a motor. You have to draw the circuit, add all the components, and make sure it follows the right standards. You cannot use paper or a simple drawing tool as a professional worker or student.
When that happens, I know exactly what to do, and now I’m going to show you how I solve it using AutoCAD Electrical.
First, open your browser. In the search bar, type AutoCAD Electrical download and hit enter. Then, click on the official Autodesk website. If you’re a student, you can create a free account and download the software using your college license. You can follow the same steps if you're an employee using your work license. Once you install it, you can open the application from your desktop.
When you open AutoCAD Electrical, the main workspace has everything you need to start your project. On the left-hand side, you have the project manager panel, where you can click Open to open an existing drawing or New to start a new one. At the top of the screen, there’s the navigation menu or ribbon bar.You should click on the Home tab to access drawing tools, modification tools, panel layout tools, and insertion tools. I started by drawing a circle, a square, and a line in the middle of the screen. I also used the copy tool, added a text box, and rotated it. You can also change the color of your drawing and choose the type of line you want. Clicking on Project helps you manage your project files, so you can delete, copy, or organize them easily. At the bottom of the screen, the Command Line lets you enter actions directly. You can also zoom in and out by scrolling the mouse wheel forward or backward.
Let’s solve the main issue. You must use the common components from the ISA norms, so click on Schematic and then on Icon Menu. There, you will find all the electrical components, like push buttons and lights, instead of drawing them manually. If you click on Insert Component, you will also find hydraulic, PID, and pneumatic equipment like valves and actuators. Sometimes, AutoCAD doesn't include the exact component based on ISA norms, but you can easily modify the component to make it correct. As a surprise, I’m going to show you some examples from my coursework.
This is a PID diagram of a milk pasteurization process. Here is also a wiring diagram, a motor power diagram, and a diagram of the input and output cards of a PLC.
