Hello, my name is Amanda Laetitia Etienne, i've been studying Paralegal Technology at Ahuntsic for the past 2 years now.
For those of you who don’t know about paralegal technology, I’ll just explain what this program involves. We take courses in law which teaches us how to defend ourselves, how to find the tools we need for the court, etc.
Whether you're a paralegal student or a legal professional, we all need a reliable legal information at our fingertips
I'm here to walk you through a powerful tool that you can trust and use every day in your legal career
I'm a paralegal technology student and i've been trained by my teachers who are professionals, on how to navigate SOQUIJ efficiently
Today, we're going to learn how to search for judgments, legislation and legal doctrine quickly and accurately on SOQUIJ
If you follow these simple steps, you'll be able to find exactly what you need in minutes and not hours
So...are you ready to become a SOQUIJ power-user?
For many paralegals, finding relevant judgments or legal texts quickly can be frustrating and confusing. It's a busy law office, timelines are tight, lawyers need information ASAP, and let's say you're expected to be a master researcher
If you're slow or unsure, it can affect your productivity and undermine confidence in your skills
For example, imagine you need to find a 2024 judgment from Quebec Court of Appeal on a specific clause of the Civil Code; not a generic ruling, but something very precise, and you have minutes to find it
That's where SOQUIJ comes in. It lets you search efficiently, filter results quickly, and find exactly what you need, all from your computer. Let me show you how
Now, open your web browser and go to google, tap in SOQUIJ
Here, you'll find a search bar, different tabs for judgments, legislation, doctrine and more
If you're looking for, let's say, a judgmet about child support, you first go to the classification plan. Soquij lets you search by the classification plan, which means you can filter cases by predefined legal taxonomy.
The classification plan will show you different legal subjects. Since we're looking for a child judgement judgment, we have to find the ''family'' classification and then ''child support''
Now, SOQUIJ will filter the judgments to match the legal context that you need
You can now browse through the results, and click on any judgment to view its full text and related documents
So if you're in paralegal technology, using the classification plan on SOQUIJ lets you find cases that deal with a very specific legal issue, saving you time and reducing overwhelm in your search
I hope that was useful to you because i need you to try find your own judgment now
