Welcome everyone! My name is Alexia Lehouillier-Berthiaume and I study at Cégep du Vieux Montreal. I have been studying Social Sciences, in Actions for change profile, for two semesters. This program, where we have courses like Economy, History and Psychology, can lead to many related fields, like justice, law, and politics. Personally, I would like to study Communications and Politics at university. The job of my dreams would be to be a political attaché.
Nobody wants to look like a beginner when you start a new job in the field of your dreams. I certainly don’t. If you are like me, you don't want it either.
I'm not a political expert, but I have done a lot of research recently on the subject.
In 2023, I won an award for having been the best journalist at the Parlement des jeunes simulation.
Let me explain a problem you could face when you finally get the job of your dreams as a political attaché at the National Assembly. Even if you learned a lot of things during your studies, you may have forgotten some details of the Parliamentary Procedures.
If you make a bad first impression on your first day at Parliament Hill, it won't be catastrophic, but chances are that you will be shy of having done an avoidable error or maybe your colleagues will trust you a little less.
Just so you are fully prepared for the first day of your job, I have found where to find these procedures.
First, open your browser. Secondly, type "National Assembly of Quebec" in the address bar. Click on the first result.
In the middle of the screen, there are Assembly's news. On the navigation menu, you will find different sections : Members, Parliamentary Proceedings, "Voice your opinion!" and Video. There is also a calendar with Parliament’s activities on the right hand of the screen. Furthermore, there is the website's logo in the top left corner of the screen.
Now, to find the procedures, click on the search bar in the top right corner of the screen. Type "Parliamentary Procedure in Québec" and click on the submit button. Scroll down, and you will see the results. You have to click on the more recent one, the one that has been published in 2021. Click on the link. It will download a PDF.
This guide is very useful. In the table of contents, you can see all the subjects. To check for a specific thing, you can do CTRL + F in the document. For example, if you want to know more about Question period, in which members of parliament ask questions of Government to call it to account for its actions, you can type it and find the information. Let's say you want to know the time allotted to questions and answers, you can click on the title, scroll and read about it here.
So, if you are planning to study in Political Science or apply for a job at Parliament Hill, that is a good way to prepare and refresh your memory.
