Today, we're diving into this program: a dynamic college program that trains future legal professionals right here in Quebec. We’re learning a wide range of skills in the Paralegal Technology program. Not only do we study how to read and interpret the laws applied in the province of Quebec, but we also explore legal doctrines and jurisprudence. While a large part of the program involves reading and analyzing texts, we’re also trained to use key legal websites that support our understanding of the law.
I've only been studying in the Paralegal Technology program for a year, but I'm highly motivated to improve because my goal is to work in Ontario. I'm not an expert yet, but I've spent a lot of time practicing on this incredibly useful website.
This tutorial will only take about three minutes, so stay with me until the end — it could really help you master this tool and solve the challenges you're facing.
Now, let me explain the issue. After graduation, paralegal students are expected to know how to use legal websites to interpret and understand laws. One of the most commonly used tools in the legal workplace is CAIJ.
Unfortunately, not all schools take the time to properly teach students how to use this essential resource. As a result, many interns find themselves learning it on the spot during their internship, which can slow them down and lead to mistakes. For example, they might struggle to find specific and relevant doctrines or jurisprudence, which are crucial for building strong legal arguments and completing tasks efficiently.
This is why, when that happens, I know just what to do, which I am going to show you now.
First, open your Google or Chrome. Type CAIJ into the address bar and hit “Enter”. If you typed the URL correctly, you will see this page.
In the top right corner of the screen, you can see “Connect to the CAIJ space.” You click on it, and you will be transferred to a new tab. If it gives you this option, click on “Open the classic version” in the top right corner of the screen. Then, if you have an account, you can click on the connection button in the top right corner of the screen.
Now that we are connected to CAIJ, I will explain to you what this website is. CAIJ stands for, in French, “Centre d’accès à l’information juridique”. It’s a legal research platform used across Quebec that gives students, lawyers, notaries, and paralegals access to a wide range of legal information. This includes:
Laws and regulations (provincial and federal)
Jurisprudence (court decisions)
Doctrinal texts (legal commentary and analysis)
Legal forms, templates, and practical guides
It’s a powerful tool that helps legal professionals find accurate and up-to-date legal information quickly. Mastering CAIJ is essential for any student planning to work in a legal environment in Quebec — and learning how to use it early can make a big difference in your confidence and performance on the job.
