Civil Engineering screencast

Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Abdul-Rahim.

Today I want to tell you about the "Virtual Writing Tutor" website.

I've been studying Civil Engineering for three years at Ahuntsic College, and this tool has really helped me with my schoolwork.

Civil Engineering is about building and taking care of structures like bridges, roads, and buildings.

After graduation, I would like to work as an engineer.

Who design buildings, plan roads.

And manage construction sites.

The Problem

As civil engineers, we need to write clear reports, project plans, environmental studies, and safety documents.

That might be a challenge.

because our technical classes don't always cover good communication.

The Virtual Writing Tutor website helps solve this problem.

The Quest

So, let’s open the website by adding a new tab. In the address bar at the top of the screen in the middle, just type out the url which is at virtualwritingtutor.com. Let me show you how it works and why it's useful for engineering students.
In the top right corner there the logo. Just under the logo, there is the navigation menu if you want to learn more about the website. Just under the navigation menu, there are examples of usages of the website.

You'll see a big text area in the middle of the page, where you actually write the text you want to checkout. The tools are clearly marked in the menu at the top.
To check your writing, just paste your text into the box and click the "Check Grammar" button. The system then looks at your text and highlights possible mistakes with different colors: red for spelling errors, blue for grammar problems, and green for style suggestions.

The Solution

Let me show you how I used this tool to make my reports better. I think that the most important tool is the spelling checker. For example:
Here's an example of sentence I can write in my reports:
"The concrete cannot be used because the compressive strength is not respected."
Right away, you can see that there is a spelling mistake
After clicking on the Check Grammar button, it found several problems:
• It will tell you how many words that you have
• How many mistakes
• And it will calculate the error density
In my case, since I have no grammar mistakes but only spelling mistakes. Its telling me that I have one error and that it’s a possible spelling mistake.
Also, the website is giving me suggestions to replace the error.

On top of that, If I’m not so sure about how to pronounce a word, I can just type it in the text area, and click on the speech button and it well tell me the good pronunciation. By example “ Reinforcement “

The Conclusion

So, By using this website, you can:
• Fix grammar mistakes in technical papers
• Learn to say technical terms correctly
• And Build better communication skills for managing projects

Thank you for listening.
