How to be engaged as a police cadet at the SPVM?

Introduction

Hi, my name is Talia Cayer. I am in my second year of police-technology. In my program, you learn how to be a good policeman. My technique has six semesters, so it lasts three years. We have many courses such as Criminology, Sociology, combat course, swimming lessons, and law course.

Like everybody, I want to be the best policeman possible, and I want have the most experience before starting my police career.

Even though I just begun my second year of police-technology, and I am not and expert, I can certainly tell, after some research, that being a police cadet will definitely help you become a better police officer.

Everyone that I know that has been a police cadet acquired a lot of experience and is now more ready to work in the police.

Today, I will show you how to be hired as a police cadet at the SPVM.

Don’t worry, my explanations won’t take forever.

The Problem

In my future career, I will need to be hired as a police cadet in a police department. It is not mandatory, but this work is very strongly suggested. The objective of working as a police cadet is to provide practice by exercising our professional field. This work is only during the summer, between June’s beginning and the end of August. The advantage of this job is the opportunity to study during the school year and then, working in a job related to your studies during the summer.

The process of becoming a police cadet may seem long and complicated, but once you know what you're doing, it's actually simple.

For example, how to send your job application to the SPVM?

Before you start panicking, let me show you how to be engaged as a police cadet at the SPVM. But, first, what is the SPVM? It is the police department of Montreal city.

The Quest

So, first thing to do is to open your browser and create a new tab. Type “Recruitment cadet SPVM”. Click on the website that is called “recrutement SPVM, cadet”. You will see an image of a man and a woman with their SPVM cadet uniform, and you will notice that the page is in French. But, don’t worry, I have a solution for you. At the right of the page, there is “English” written in a gray box. Click on it, and it will translate your page in English.

Now, you should see that the title of the page is “Discover the work of a police cadet”. Here, this small paragraph explains to you that, before staring as a police cadet, you will have a forty-five hours paid training. The SPVM will also provide you all the necessary equipment such as the complete uniform. Scroll a little bit down to see the responsibilities that this work includes. Below the list of responsibilities, you can see that the hour wages is twenty-one dollars and twenty. Scroll up, and you will see in a dark blue box the selection criteria. Click on it, and it will bring you to another page. You will see written in large letters “Selection criteria”. These are the conditions you must follow to be engaged as a police cadet. Make sure that you read carefully and that you become aware of those criteria. The advantage of this job is that the police cadets who will stand out for their work within the SPVM will eventually be prioritized in the selection process and can thus be hired more quickly as neighborhood agents. To be hired as a police cadet you will need to pass all the steps of the selection process. First, you will have a selection interview. In this interview, you will be assessed for your interpersonal communication like your teamwork, your analytical mind and the client orientation. Finally, you will have to pass the security accreditation, who is the security and integrity check.

The Solution

Then, when you finish reading carefully, click on “How to apply” in the dark blue box. This will bring you to the page that explains how to apply as a police cadet. For this step, you will need a photocopy of your birth certificate, a colour copy of your health insurance or your driver’s license front and back, and a proof of your full-time student status, like your course schedule or your registrar’s letter, or a copy of your college or university diploma. Now that you have all your necessary documents in your possession, write an email to recrutement@spvm.qc.ca. Do not forget to identify all of your documents and your subject, like Police cadet Process summer 2024.
