20 Electrical Engineering Technology: Automation and Controls terms
In this glossary I will write important terms that use almost all the time in my technique. I will also explain them, so that everyone can understand them.
autocad
adjective, noun
AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software application used to create precise 2D and 3D technical drawings.
Example: In this report AUTOCAD 2002 was used to draw the velocity and acceleration diagrams for the 4 bar linkage.
fr: autocad
automatic
noun or adjective
Automatic means operating by itself without direct human control, or happening without conscious thought, effort, or choice.
Example: However, this kind of output does not promote acquisition but just the learning of desired responses. 4.2 COGNITIVISM According to McLaughlin (1987), "second-language learning (...) involves the gradual integration of sub-skills as controlled processes initially predominate and then become AUTOMATIC".
fr: automatique
capacitor
noun
A passive electronic component that stores and releases electrical energy in an electric field.
Example: The effects of a reverse current induced at the anode by the incident light, which would be accelerated by the stopping voltage produced at the CAPACITOR, also deserves further investigation.
fr: condensateur
coding
verb
Coding is the process of writing step-by-step instructions that tell a computer what tasks to perform.
Example: The next one is the comparison among different modulation schemes in a same CODING scheme------packetisd state-pinning NASA CODING.
fr: codage
computer
noun
An electronic device that takes raw data as input, processes it using a set of instructions, stores the information, and produces an output.
Example: Another problem I encountered was having some discrepancies with percentage calculations between a calculator and the COMPUTER, as the COMPUTER automatically rounded up calculations.
fr: ordinateur
electricity
noun
Electricity is a form of energy tied to the presence and flowed of electric charges, mostly tiny particles called electrons.
Example: The power from rivers was harnessed by the building of dams to control flow and direct it through turbines to generate ELECTRICITY. The developments started in the 1930s in the US with the building of Hoover dam which has since has been dwarfed by many other projects providing ELECTRICITY, irrigation, water supply and flood control on many of the world's major rivers.
fr: électricité
ethernet
adjective
Ethernet is a standard wired technology used to connect computers and devices in a local area network (LAN).
Example: It is preferable over Token Ring because it has further advances in the size of the bandwidth with Gigabit ETHERNET being common these days.
fr: ethernet
grafcet
noun, adjective
GRAFCET is a standardized graphical specification language used to describe the sequential behavior of automated systems and industrial control processes.
Example: I code the robot in grafcet to see every step.
fr: grafcet
ladder logic
noun
Ladder logic is a visual programming language used to program programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for industrial automation.
Example: The code is in ladder logic.
fr: logique à contacts
light
noun
Light most fundamentally means the natural energy or visible light that makes things visible to the human eye.
Example: Hamilton, 1981) demonstrates the logical problems of a behaviour for exchange, and can also shed LIGHT on the selective process of evolutionary altruistic behaviour.
fr: lumière
microsoft
noun
Microsoft is a portmanteau word combining microcomputer and software.
Example: Adobe's PDF, the HTML and XML web languages, and the JPEG graphical formats are among the best known ODS while MICROSOFT's .doc format is an example of a "closed" standard.
fr: microsoft
monitor
noun
A monitor can be a display screen for a computer, a device that tracks data or health signs, or a person who watches over a process or group.
Example: The MONITOR consists of: The shared variables associated with the resource A set of procedures which can operate on the shared variables.
fr: moniteur
motor
noun
A machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy to create motion.
Example: When fixed the connection between serial port and the stepper-MOTOR, after power on, the stepper-MOTOR turned some steps and stopped at a position.
fr: moteur
network
noun
A network is a system of two or more connected computers or devices that share data, files, and resources.
Example: Therefore, a large part of the trading NETWORK relied on the production of ceramics, not just for export of the artefacts themselves but also for the transportation of other goods.
fr: réseau
oscilloscope
noun
Oscilloscope is an electronic test instrument that draws a graph of electrical signals to show how voltage changes over time.
Example: The oscillator output was connected to both the Y 2 input of the OSCILLOSCOPE and the frequency meter.
fr: oscilloscope
PLC
noun
PLC stands for Programmable Logic Controller. It is a rugged, specialized industrial computer used to automate and manage manufacturing assembly lines, robotic devices, and other electromechanical processes.
Example: The results were Kidde PLC has had increased profitability and efficiency ratios. Kidde PLC has strengthened its market position and has had good results for investors.
fr: PLC
resistance
noun
Resistance means the act or power of opposing, withstanding, or fighting against a force, idea, or system.
Example: RESISTANCE increased as work intensified and wages diminished, and work became increasingly 'dehumanized'. The dissatisfaction of workers frequently manifested itself in the form of sabotage and group RESISTANCE.
fr: résistance
robotics
noun
Robotics is the interdisciplinary branch of engineering and computer science that deals with the design, construction, operation, and use of robots.
Example: Navigation In robots navigation, path planning and collision avoidance technologies are key factors in humanoid ROBOTICS.
fr: robotique
sensor
noun
A sensor is a device that detects physical changes in the environment and turns them into electrical signals that machines or computers can read.
Example: The accuracy of the system depends primarily on the SENSOR's ability to be insensitive to other loading effects, such as axial forces and bending forces.
fr: capteur
wire
noun
A wire is a thin, flexible thread or rod of metal used to fasten objects, carry electricity, or transmit telecommunication signals.
Example: The drum is turned the torque produced exerts a tensile force onto the ropes therefore pulling the carriage and drawing the iron WIRE through the die.
