My name is Rima, I am studying in Natural and Health Science. It's been a year since I am in this program. My glossary will be for students who are going to enter the same program as me. The glossary will help them to understand some words that are going to be important to know because they are commonly used in this field. This glossary will have 20 field-related terms for biology, laboratory works, math, anatomy and some health words. The method I used to find those words for my glossary were on Virtual Writing Tutor Glossary Creator and internet. I tell my reader to go check my words and to go try my card game or exercises.
active transport
noun
Active transport is the movement of molecules or ions across a cell membrane from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration, which requires cellular energy.
Example: It serves as an energy source in muscle contractions, ACTIVE TRANSPORT, signal amplification and biosynthesis, amongst a myriad of other energy requiring reactions in the body.
fr: transport actif
cellular respiration
noun
Cellular respiration is the metabolic process by which organisms break down nutrients like glucose to produce usable cellular energy in the form of ATP ( adenosine triphosphate).
Example: In the presence of oxygen, pyruvate formed in glycolysis is transported into mitochondria, where it is oxidised by O 2 to CO 2 in a series of oxidative phosphorylation reactions collectively called CELLULAR RESPIRATION.
fr: respiration cellulaire
chemical beaker
noun
A beaker is a cylindrical glass or plastic vessel with a flat bottom and a small pouring lip, used primarily in laboratories to mix, heat, and measure liquids.
Example: To this was added 1:1 Methanol : HPLC grade water from a 300mL BEAKER, the stock solution was filled to just below the volumetric mark.
fr: bécher
dilution
noun
Dilution is the process of reducing the concentration of a solute in a solution by adding more solvent.
Example: The apparatus also induces error; the DILUTION method using standard flask has an error of ± 0.5 ml, the volumetric pipette has an error of ± 0.2ml.
fr: dilution
enzyme
noun
Enzymes are specialized proteins or RNA molecules that act as biological catalysts to speed up chemical reactions in living organisms.
Example: This summaries the events of a single turnover of the ENZYME, the system is now ready to complete a second turnover (events of (a) to (f) repeated) to complete the total turnover of the ENZYME.
fr: enzyme
erlenmeyer flask
noun
An Erlenmeyer flask is a cone-shaped laboratory container with a flat bottom and a narrow neck.
Example: The only container readily available is a 150-mL Erlenmeyer flask.
fr: fiole Erlenmeyer
force
noun
In physics, a force is a push or a pull upon an object that results from the object's interaction with another body.
Example: The force of the crash tore the steering wheel out of Bertulius’ car.
fr: force
graduated cylinder
noun
A graduated cylinder is a tall, narrow laboratory instrument used to measure the volume of a liquid.
Example: To measure the volume of liquid in a graduated cylinder, you should make a reading at the bottom of the meniscus, the lowest point on the curved surface of the liquid.
fr: cylindre gradué
homeostasis
noun
Homeostasis is the self-regulating process by which a living organism maintains a stable, balanced internal environment necessary for survival.
Example: Any deviation from this range affects the body's ability to maintain HOMEOSTASIS.
fr: homéostasie
incubator
noun
An incubator is a controlled device or organization that maintains ideal conditions to help fragile things—such as premature babies, hatching eggs, biological cultures, or new businesses—grow and develop safely
Example: Whatever the size the INCUBATOR needs to have a constant temperature and a turning system as well as some form of moisture, as the eggs will lose 12% of their total weight during the incubation period due to water lost.
fr: incubateur
lab coat
noun
A lab coat is a knee-length, usually white overcoat worn by scientists, doctors, and researchers to protect their regular clothes and skin from chemicals, spills, and biological hazards.
Example: Glass vacuum apparatus (wear safety glasses) Appropriate lab wear must be worn including LAB COAT, gloves, and goggles.
fr: blouse de laboratoire
metabolism
noun
Metabolism is the total of all chemical processes in your body that change food into energy, repair cells, and support growth.
Example: The Citric Acid Cycle METABOLISM is defined as the sum of the chemical reactions that occur within living organisms.
fr: métabolisme
microscope
noun
A microscope is an instrument that makes small objects look larger so you can see details invisible to the naked eye.
fr: microscope
mitochondrion
noun
A mitochondrion is a tiny structure inside a cell—known as an organelle—that generates most of the chemical energy needed to power the cell's biochemical reactions.
Example: The MITOCHONDRION also needs some proteins encoded by the nuclear genome, such as RNA and DNA polymerase, which are imported into the mitochondrial from the cystol.
fr: mitochondrie
molarity
noun
Molarity is a measure of the molar concentration of a solution, defined as the number of moles of solute dissolved in one liter of solution.
Example: The standard solution e.g. sodium hydroxide, is usually obtained from the laboratory and its concentration (MOLARITY) is given on a label.
fr: molarité
pH
noun
pH is a scale that measures how acidic or basic a liquid solution is.
Example: A PH meter was used to ensure the PH of each solution to be tested was within the range PH 5-7.
fr: pH
pipette
noun
A pipette is a lab tool used to measure, transfer, and dispense small amounts of liquid.
Example: Duplicate samples were prepared using milk. 10ml of milk was weighed into a 250 ml conical flask.10 ml of standard 0.05M silver nitrate solution was added with a PIPETTE.10 ml of conc.
fr: pipette
precipitate
noun
Precipitates can be a noun meaning solid particles that separate from a liquid solution, or a verb meaning to cause something to happen suddenly.
Example: Upon standing, the mixture settled into a dark olive green solution with intensely green black PRECIPITATE at the bottom. With further standing the solution clarified to a very transparent olive green solution as more PRECIPITATE settled.
fr: précipité
safety glasses
noun
Safety glasses are protective eyewear designed to shield your eyes from flying debris, dust, and minor impacts during work or recreational activities.
Example: Glass vacuum apparatus (wear SAFETY GLASSES) Appropriate lab wear must be worn including lab coat, gloves and goggles.
