20 Medicine terms

My name is Rosalie and I'm in my second year in Natural Science at Montmorency College. When I finish my DEC, I want to study medicine, and it is important to be able to communicate effectively with our patients and even our colleagues! So, this glossary is design to help other students who are interested in this field. This glossary contains 20 terms and each term will have a definition, a translation, an example and even a pronunciation, so you'll know exactly how to use them. I found the terms and their definition on the internet. Now, you'll know a knew list of terms related to your job, and you'll be able to use them correctly in your future.

anesthetist
noun
An anesthetist is a health care professional trained to give drugs that stop pain or cause sleep during medical operations.
Example: Tell the anesthetist about any drugs the patient is taking.

noun
An antibiotic is a type of medicine or chemical that kills harmful bacteria or stops them from growing.
Example: Jeon treated the endosymbiotic bacteria with the antibiotic chloramphenicol.

appendicitis

Appendicitis is a painful medical condition where your appendix becomes swollen, inflamed, and filled with pus.
Example: Her GP then made a direct referral to an emergency surgical unit with suspected appendicitis.

blood

A specialized fluid connective tissue that circulates through the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries of vertebrates, delivering necessary oxygen and nutrients to cells while removing waste products.
Example: Swabbing is also used to trace firearm residues, however most commonly used for smeared material evidence such as blood.

diagnosis
noun
A diagnosis is the process of identifying a disease, illness, or problem by examining signs, symptoms, and test results.
Example: As mentioned before, the presents of raised electrolyte concentrations is an important part of diagnosis.

emergency
noun
An emergency is a sudden, unexpected, and dangerous situation that poses an immediate risk to health, life, property, or the environment and requires urgent action.
Example: He's monitoring critically ill patients in accident and emergency.

fever
noun
A fever is a temporary increase in your body temperature—typically reaching 100.4°F (38°C) or higher—that acts as a natural sign your immune system is fighting an infection.
Example: Unlike the symptoms exhibited by Legionnaires' disease (fever, disorientation, lethargy and lung damage), symptoms of Pontiacs fever are less severe and include fever, chills, and headaches.

germ

A germ is a microscopic living thing, especially one that causes disease, or a small seed or origin from which something larger develops.
Example: Following a few more divisions, the primordial germ cell is divided symmetrically rather than asymmetrically and produces the 2 primordial germ cells Z 2 and Z 3 which are joined by 2 somatic gonadal cells (Z 1 and Z 4).

heartburn

Heartburn is a painful, burning feeling in the chest or throat caused by stomach acid flowing back up into the esophagus.
Example: She has not experienced any night sweats, heartburn, indigestion, nausea, vomiting or joint stiffness pain.

hemorrhage
noun
A hemorrhage is the rapid and heavy loss of blood from damaged blood vessels.
Example: Pressure applied with a sterile pressure dressing will control hemorrhage.

malignancy
noun
Malignancy is the medical term for cancer, meaning a disease where abnormal cells grow and divide in an uncontrolled way.
Example: As with all forms of malignancy, breast cancer is an unpredictable condition however a number of factors can be used to give an indication of how successful treatment might have been.

nauseous
adjective
Nauseous means feeling sick to your stomach or, less commonly, causing a sickening feeling of disgust.
Example: The pain was such a sharp strong pain it made him feel nauseous.

An organ is a specialized part of a living thing made of different tissues that work together to do a specific job.
Example: The skin is a well-understood organ and as such there has been much research into the ability of stem cells to generate skin grafts for patient-specific transplantation.

osteoarthritis
noun
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, occurring when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in a joint wears down over time.
Example: Patient was wheelchair bound due to the pain he was getting from his knees due to osteoarthritis.

pneumonia
noun
Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs, causing them to fill with fluid or pus.
Example: The primary, obvious complication of a fall is that of injury: laceration, contusion head injury, possibly with a subdural haematoma fractured limb, particularly fractured neck of femur fractured rib, which may result in pneumonia.

pregnancy
noun
Pregnancy is the time when a fetus develops inside a woman's uterus.
Example: During the pregnancy, although there is increased iron absorption still not enough is absorbed from the intestines and greater amounts need to be taken in.

prescription

A prescription is a doctor's written order for a pharmacist to give a specific medicine or treatment to a patient.
Example: Medical intervention's prescription was not changed during his first admission.

seizure
noun
A seizure is either a sudden burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain or the legal act of taking possession of property or a person.
Example: Classification is important as the different seizure types are managed differently.

stroke
noun
A stroke is a serious medical emergency that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts.
Example: Fall prediction index for patients in stroke rehabilitation.

syringe
noun
A syringe is a simple pump device used to inject fluids into or withdraw fluids from the body or other containers.
Example: The syringe was withdrawn after 3 seconds, and the created chromatogram printed.
