15 Health science terms

This glossary can be useful, when learning new medical terms while learning new subjects or while learning the subject in English, which can be confusing for people who learned it in French first. These terms are used in the many subjects we learn in the health science program such as chemistry and biology.

Chronic refers to something that persists for a long time, is constant, or recurs frequently.
Example: Formulation of the patient's problem(s) Encapsulate this in physical, psychological and social terms (the triple diagnosis) is a young boy who is suffering the effects of a CHRONIC, incurable illness.

edema
noun
Edema is the medical term for swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in your body's tissue.
Example: This will expedite the removal of hemoarthrosis, reduce spasms, EDEMA and pain as well as reduce nerve root irritation when present.

euthanasia

Euthanasia is the intentional act of deliberately ending a person's life to relieve intractable pain and suffering, typically in cases of severe or terminal illness.
Example: Furthermore, of the 55% of nurses who had received requests from patients for active EUTHANASIA but refused to comply, only 39% stated illegality as a reason for that refusal, whereas for the remaining 61% it was not a factor in the decision-making process.

haematologist

A haematologist (or hematologist) is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing diseases of the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system.
Example: We will refer to back to the care of your HAEMATOLOGIST who your have outpatient appointments with and inform her about what has been happening".

heparin

Heparin is a powerful anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevents blood clots from forming or getting larger.
Example: There is a risk after having a first clot that further clots may from, this risk can be reduced by thinning your blood with a drug called HEPARIN.

hypothalamus

The hypothalamus is a tiny but vital structure deep inside the brain that acts as the body's smart control center.
Example: Background Under normal physiological conditions thirst and water regulation are largely controlled by anti-diuretic hormone (ADH, or vasopressin), which is synthesized in the HYPOTHALAMUS.

An infusion is the process of introducing a substance into the body or extracting flavors and compounds from plant materials into a liquid.
Example: Continuous INFUSION IV is a way of keeping the amount of drug available to body tissues at a constant level.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs.
Example: Prolonged treatment required (8-10 weeks) Contraindicated in LUPUS erythematosus, porphyria and severe liver disease Interacts with warfarin, cyclosporin and oral contraceptive pill.

meningitis

Meningitis is a potentially life-threatening condition defined as the inflammation of the meninges—the three protective membranes that surround your brain and spinal cord. It is usually caused by an infection (viral, bacterial, or fungal) of the fluid surrounding the central nervous system.
Example: The complications include blood infection, MENINGITIS in mother and many detrimental effects to the baby (e.g. miscarriage, premature birth, blood infection, MENINGITIS and death).

Physiotherapy is a science-based healthcare profession focused on restoring, maintaining, and maximizing movement and physical function.
Example: Conservative management includes anti-inflammatory medication, PHYSIOTHERAPY, and reassurance.

A safeguard is a precautionary measure, device, or law designed to protect people, systems, or assets from harm, danger, or loss.
Example: There was also a forced Air Force disclaimer that 'SAFEGUARDS would prevent the occurrence of events depicted in this film', as the military had always maintained that no attack could be launched without 'civilian authority'.

Screening is the systematic process of evaluating individuals, objects, or data to identify specific characteristics, risks, or conditions.
Example: Nationally, SCREENING for bowel cancer could save approximately 1,200(2) lives each year.

sedation

Sedation is the use of medication to calm the body, relieve anxiety, and reduce awareness.
Example: The review found that chlorpromazine caused more adverse effects, such as SEDATION, acute dystonia, and parkinsonism than a placebo.

sepsis

Sepsis is your body’s extreme, life-threatening reaction to an infection.
Example: Omplete with an acutely threatened limb (At risk group) Incomplete with a viable limb In category one, amputation is inevitable and should be carried out promptly as delay may result in death from the systemic sequelae of muscle necrosis which include hyperkalaemia, acidosis, acute renal failure and SEPSIS.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein.
Example: Her left foot and ankle were swollen suggestive of a deep VENOUS THROMBOSIS, there was however, no associated erythema or warmth.
