My name is Mohamed Belhassen Mahfoudh. I study Electrical Engineering, Networks and Telecommunications at Ahuntsic College in Montreal. In my program, we learn how computers and other devices are connected so they can exchange information. For example, every time you send a message or watch a video online, your data travels through routers, switches and cables before it reaches you. Network technicians are the people who set up these systems, keep them running and protect them from attacks. Most of the technical documentation in this field is written in English, so I made this glossary to learn the key terms I will need in my future job.
bandwidth
noun
The maximum amount of data that can be transferred over a network connection in a given amount of time.
Example: This leads to BANDWIDTH-limited amplified laser pulses.

data
noun
Information that is processed, stored or transmitted by a computer.
Example: DATA collected from Daphne Major have shown a positive correlation between beak width and beak depth.

fiber optic
noun
Relating to thin glass fibers that carry information as pulses of light.
Example: Fiber optic cables provide very fast internet.
en: fiber optic
firewall
noun
A hardware or software security system that controls traffic between a trusted network and untrusted networks such as the internet
Example: a FIREWALL controls only the traffic passing through it therefore is not able to protect internal resources from inside users e.g. co-workers

frequency
noun
The number of cycles of a wave that occur in one second, measured in hertz (Hz).
Example: Williams does in Adaptation and Natural Selection: I use the term gene to mean 'that which segregates and recombines with appreciable FREQUENCY.'
en: ˈfrēkwənsē
motherboard
noun
The main circuit board of a computer, which connects the processor, memory and other components.
Example: Another modification had to be made to the power supply to allow it to switch on by the rocker switch on the back of it without a signal from a PC MOTHERBOARD. The connection to the MOTHERBOARD signal was mimicked by connecting the green cable of the MOTHERBOARD connector in the power supply directly to ground, see Figure 1-25.

network
noun
A group of computers and devices connected together to share data and resources.
Example: Therefore, a large part of the trading NETWORK relied on the production of ceramics, not just for export of the artefacts themselves but also for the transportation of other goods.

network security
noun
The use of hardware, software and policies to protect a network from unauthorized access, misuse or attacks.
Example: NETWORK SECURITY is nowadays one of the most emphasized topics within the computer science.

protocol
noun
A set of rules that governs how data is formatted and transmitted between devices on a network.
Example: ollowed by commands ASCII American Standard Code for Information Interchange DC Direct current I O Input Output Tx Rx Transmitter Receiver TCP IP Transmission Control PROTOCOL Internet PROTOCOL 1.
en: pro·to·col
router
noun
A device that forwards data packets between different networks.
Example: Network firewalls:usually running on a dedicated network device (ROUTER etc) or computer positioned on the boundary of two or more networks.
en: ˈroudər
server
noun
A computer or program that stores data and provides services to other computers, called clients, on a network.
Example: These holes turn up when data provided by a web client is used immediately by SERVER-side scripts to generate a page of results for that user.
en: ˈsərvər
signal
noun
An electrical or electromagnetic wave that carries information from one point to another.
Example: In all cases, ion concentration changes within the cells are essential for generation of an electrical SIGNAL.
en: sig·nal1
switch
noun
A networking device that connects multiple devices within a local area network (LAN).
Example: The ability exists to be able to SWITCH signal sources on the Main Scoreboard between either the serial cable or the wireless link.
en: swiCH
transmitter
noun
A device that converts signals or data into a form that can be sent over a medium such as a cable or radio waves.
Example: Followed by commands ASCII American Standard Code for Information Interchange DC Direct current I O Input Output Tx Rx TRANSMITTER Receiver TCP IP Transmission Control Protocol Internet Protocol 1.
en: tranzˈmidər
wireless
adjective
Using radio waves instead of cables to transmit data between devices.
Example: Currently, many mobile robots working both indoor and outdoor environments use WIRELESS communication Wi-Fi
