I made this glossary to help better understand some of the vocabulary related to the field of psychology.

masochist
(n)
A person who enjoys an activity that appears to be painful or tedious.
Example: What kind of masochist would take part in such an experiment?

psyche
(n)
The human soul, mind, or spirit.
Example: If I take the drug, my body and PSYCHE may change quite a lot between now and the age of 150.

psychosis
(n)
A set of symptoms indicating a loss of contact with reality, characterized primarily by hallucinations (sensing things that are not there) and delusions (false, firmly held beliefs).
Example: Observed problems in people with damage to this area include disjointed behavior and confusion, PSYCHOSIS and hallucinations.

relapse
(n)
To lapse back into a former state or condition, especially one involving bad habits.
Example: Antipsychotic drugs relieve florid psychotic symptoms such as thought disorder, hallucinations, and delusions, and prevent RELAPSE.

repress
(v)
To exclude (painful or disturbing memories, for example) automatically or unconsciously from the conscious mind.
Example: They might merely be teaching their patients how to REPRESS their fear and anxiety.

stimulus
(n)
A thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue.
Example: The chimpanzees also seem to possess the ability to understand new combinations of signs that they have not come across before and to express themselves spontaneously i.e. without waiting for a STIMULUS which provokes them to respond.

stressor
(n)
Something that causes a state of strain or tension.
Example: This can be considered a STRESSOR for the family as Mrs Stacy was now faced with being in hospital without her husband and also with one less person to look after their 6 month old son, Sam.
