Example: Acoustics is the branch of physics focused on the study of mechanical waves—sound, ultrasound, and infrasound—in gases, liquids, and solids.

The separation of white light into colors, or the separation of any radiation according to wavelength.
Example: However, for a light source comprising of different constituent wavelengths, or indeed a continuum as in the case of white-light, the effect of DISPERSION must be considered.

Example: Ideally the ULTRASONIC energy would only be reduced by the spreading of the sound wave but in real solids scattering and absorption also occurs.
