My name is Sédrik and I've been in the Social Science program for 6 months now. My topic is about law terms and my glossary can help student to learn some words related to law. There're 20 terms I want to explain, and I used a glossary of legal terms on Google to find the words and the definitions. Now, I want you to take a look at my glossary.

Appeal
Apply to a higher court for a reversal of the decision of a lower court.
Bench trial
The type of trial that does not involve a jury.
Capital offense
A crime that can be punished by death.
Court
Government entity presided over by judges to resolve legal disputes.
Crime
An action or omission that constitutes an offense punishable by law.
Defendant
An individual, company, or institution sued or accused in a court of law.
Felony
A crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one year.
Judge
A public official appointed to decide cases in a court of law.
Jury
A body of people sworn to give a verdict in a legal case.
Law
The system of rules regulating the actions by penalties.
Law firm
A business that is engaged in the practice of law.
Lawsuit
A claim or dispute brought to a court of law for adjudication.
Lawyer
A person who practices or studied law.
Legal aid
Legal assistance to people who are unable to afford it.
Legal system
The framework of rules, procedures and institutions.
Plaintiff
A person who brings a case against another in a court of law.
Remand
Place a defendant on a bail or in custody, especially when a trial is adjourned.
Sanction
A threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule.
Statute
A written law passed by a legislative body.
Unliquidated claim
A claim that is difficult to quantify in money terms.
