This glossary is for nursing students who want to memorize and understand the utility of 20 different objects. Every term will come with an image, a description and pronunciation. I will use Google to help me with the definitions
alcohol swabs
a noun
Are gauze swabs that are saturated with 70% isopropyl alcohol and are used to disinfect cuts, scrapes and intact skin.
Example: The first step ti a vaccine or any type of injection, is to disinfect with an alcohol swabs.

catheter
a noun
A thin, flexible, or rigid tube inserted into the body to drain fluids (like urine), administer medication, or introduce surgical instruments.
Example: Presenting Complaint presented to A&E on with severe abdominal pain located around the umbilicus History of presenting complaint The abdominal pain started on Monday after had his CATHETER changed and has increased in severity since then. saw his GP on Tuesday who prescribed ciprofloxacin which had no effect.

defibrillator
A noun
An apparatus used to control heart fibrillation by application of an electric current to the chest wall or heart.
Example: If, these episodes do not diminish with reduced alcohol intake then further medical or surgical management may need to be considered in the guise of anti-arrhythmic drugs or an implantable cardioverter DEFIBRILLATOR.

face mask
a noun
A protective mask covering the nose and mouth.
Example: Face masks are very useful, they can be use in the surgical room, when the patients are sick, and we need to protect ourselves and the others.

gauze pads
a noun
A breathable, absorbent, and usually 100% cotton, woven material used in first aid to clean, cover, cushion, and dress wounds, burns, or incisions.
Example: At the hospital, they use gauzes to clean patient's wounds or to stop a bleeding.

gloves
a noun
A covering for the hand worn for protection against cold or dirt and typically having separate parts for each finger and the thumb.
Example: When staff were dressed in mufti it was reported that they were much more aware of the need for cleanliness and tended to wear GLOVES and aprons for increased periods of the day for protection and were also more aware of the need to wash their hands more frequently (Sparrow, 1990 Pride, 1995) suggesting the risk of cross contamination would therefore be reduced if staff wore mufti.

glucose meter
a noun
A device that may be used in the home and health care settings to measure the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood.
Example: We use a glucose meter to visualize the amount of sugar in the patient's blood.

hand sanitizer
a noun
A liquid, gel, or foam antiseptic—usually containing 60% to 95% alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol)—designed to kill bacteria and viruses on the hands when soap and water are unavailable.
Example: It is very important to use hand sanitizer every time we enter or leave the patient's room, we do this to avoid contaminating other people.

I V tubing
a noun
A flexible, sterile, disposable plastic tube used in medical settings to deliver fluids, medications, blood products, or nutrients directly into a patient’s bloodstream.
Example: Nurses use I V tubing to infiltrate fluids and medicine directly into the bloodstream of patients.

A substance used for medical treatment, especially a medicine or drug.
Example: Soon after the section lapsed, Bill's condition deteriorated and he refused to take oral MEDICATION believing it to be poison, became verbally and physically aggressive and was suffering from distressing delusions.

a noun
A very fine slender piece of metal with a point at one end and a hole or eye for thread at the other, used in sewing.
Example: It involves a thin NEEDLE, guided by ultrasound, being inserted through the mother's abdomen into the uterus.

a noun
A small flashlight shaped like a fountain pen.
Example: In the nursing field, nurses use a penlight to evaluate the patient's pupils and see if they suffer a head trauma.

pill crusher
a noun
A device used to cut or crush medication to aid in consumption.
Example: Nurses use this object to help patients that have difficulty swallowing a whole pill.

pulse oximeter
a noun
Is a small, noninvasive device—typically clipped onto a finger, earlobe, or toe—that measures the oxygen saturation level in your blood (
) and your heart rate.
Example: Investigations Oxygen Saturation PULSE OXIMETER - measures percentage of Hb saturated with oxygen, provides indication of how much oxygen is required.

saline
a noun
A solution of salt in water.
Example: The wound should be irrigated with SALINE and covered with SALINE-soaked sponges.

stethoscope
a noun
A medical instrument for listening to the action of someone's heart or breathing, typically having a small disk-shaped resonator that is placed against the chest, and two tubes connected to earpieces.
Example: Nurses use stethoscopes every day, they use it to listen to patient's hearts and lungs.

syringe
A tube with a nozzle and piston or bulb for sucking in and ejecting liquid in a thin stream, used for cleaning wounds or body cavities, or fitted with a hollow needle for injecting or withdrawing fluids.
Example: It is better to use a larger SYRINGE to give a smaller injection because you don't have to draw up so far, therefore more control over needle as you plunge.

thermometer

A specialized instrument designed to accurately measure the body temperature of humans.
Example: They use thermometers every morning in the hospital to verify if the temperature of the patients is normal or abnormal.

tourniquet
a noun
A device for stopping the flow of blood through a vein or artery, typically by compressing a limb with a cord or tight bandage.
Example: Prepare in anesthetic room, TOURNIQUET used to minimize blood loss during procedure - 300mmHg.

wheelchair
a noun
A chair fitted with wheels for use as a means of transport by a person who is is unable to walk, or finds walking difficult, as a result of illness, injury, or disability.
Example: Bath shops mobility center provide a loan service of manual or powered WHEELCHAIRS and electric scooters to anyone with limited mobility.
