20 Teaching terms
I made a glossary about teaching. I made this to help me in my future because I want to be a teacher.
- Appraisal
- A formalized evaluation, typically a face-to-face meeting, of an individual's or learner's progress and performance intending to identify strengths and weakness and improve future performance.
- Assessment
- the act of judging or deciding the amount, value, quality, or importance of something, or the judgment or decision that is made
- Asynchronous Instruction
- the idea that students learn similar material at different times and locations
- Benchmarking
- the process for identifying standards to use in comparison of practices, activities, institutions or equipment; standards my be used to identify minimal levels or for determining relative performances for comparison of subjects
- Bloom’s Taxonomy
- it's a cognitive framework of learning behaviors organized hierarchically in six categories: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis
- Brainstorming
- typically used in writing, but is any activity where individuals general ideas related to a topic or task; done in either groups or individually with no restriction on quality of ideas. Once ideas are generation, they are they evaluated and a decision about which to pursue is made
- Classroom Climate
- the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical environments in which our students learn
- Collaborative learning
- it’s the educational approach of using groups to enhance learning through working together. Groups of two or more learners work together to solve problems, complete tasks, or learn new concepts.
- Comprehension strategy
- a sequence of steps for monitoring and understanding text
- Differentiated instruction
- It’s a flexible teaching approach that adapts content, process, product, and learning environment so every student can achieve the same high-level goals in ways that work best for them
- Emergent Literacy
- the developing knowledge a child possesses of words and text that is gained prior to the onset of formal instruction
- Flowcharts
- schematic graphical representation of a sequence of operations, often used to illustrate a particular process
- Freewriting
- writing that is not limited in form, style, content, or purpose; designed to encourage students to write
- Grading system
- a system used to evaluate and grade students work
- lexical approach
- an approach to teaching languages that has a lot in common with the communicative approach
- Mentorship
- It’s the patronage, influence, guidance, or direction given by a mentor.
- Meta-skill
- higher-order skill that allows other skills to be used and developed
- Pedagogy
- the method, practice and study of effective teaching. To be effective, instructors must have both subject-based knowledge and pedagogic knowledge and skills
- Personal narrative
- a text about an event or experience that happened to the author
- Visualizing
- a comprehension strategy in which the reader constructs a mental picture of a character, setting, or process
