This glossary is all about the subject of policing, investigating and laws. Some terms used in this field of study can be complex, so let's dig in the subject. I want to become a police officer, it's essential for me to know all the terms that I will be using one day.
- Amendments
- A minor change or addition to improve a text, piece of legislation, etc.
- Bail
- The temporary release of an accused person awaiting trial, sometimes on conditions that a sum of money be lodged to guarantee their appearance in court.
- Collateral damage
- Unintended, accidental harm or death to civilians, buildings or property that isn't the primary target.
- Conflagration
- A highly destructive fire that causes significant damages to property, land, and structure.
- Criminology
- The scientific study of crime and criminals to understand what they made them do their acts.
- Division
- A functional division of a police department composed of two or more units that is commanded by a captain.
- Double jeopardy
- The prosecution of a person twice for the same offense against society.
- Estoppel
- The principle which precludes a person from asserting something contrary to what is implied by a previous action or statement by the court.
- Guilty act.
- It's an act or omission of the accused that is required for proof of the offense.
- Inchoate
- Of an offense, anticipating or preparatory to a further criminal act.
- Investigation
- The action of investigating something or someone, it's a formal or systematic examination or research.
- Jurisprudence.
- The theory or philosophy of laws.
- Lewd
- Crude, misogynist and offensive in a sexual way.
- Misdemeanor
- A minor wrongdoing that is less serious than a felony.
- Mitigate
- Make less severe, serious or painful.
- Pre-law
- It meets the two-year undergraduate requirements for law school and emphasizes skills in research, interpretation, communication, etc.
- Psychology
- The scientific study of the human mind and it functions, especially those affecting behaviors in a given context.
- Requirements
- A thing that is compulsory, a necessary and obligatory condition.
- Sociology
- The study of the development, structure and functioning of human society and socials problems.
- Warrant
- A document issued by a legal or government official that authorizes the police to make an arrest, a domicile search, etc.
