My name is Julien Rousseau, I'm currently in a springboard to a DSC but next semester I'll be in Social Science. This glossary will be for students who study Quebec History and mostly Quebec students.
This Glossary focuses on the Precolonial period of Quebec history, a period that included indigenous societies and different way to live before Europeans step foot on the continent. 20 terms will be featured in this glossary. The definitions used are from online, and are easily found. students should use this glossary to rapidly check their definitions of these frequent terms in Precolonial phase of Quebec History.
- agriculture
- The science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products.
- algonquin
- A member of an Indigenous people living mainly in Canada along the Ottawa River and its tributaries and westward to the north of Lake Superior.
- first Nations
- Any of the groups of Indigenous peoples in Canada officially recognized as an administrative unit by the federal government or functioning as such without official status.
- fishing
- The activity of catching fish, either for food or as a sport.
- gathering
- An assembly or meeting, especially a social or festive one or one held for a specific purpose.
- hunting
- The activity of hunting wild animals or game, especially for food or sport.
- huron
- A member of a confederation of Indigenous peoples of North America, formerly living in the region east of Lake Huron and now living mainly in Oklahoma and Quebec.
- indigenous Peoples
- Non-dominant people group descended from the original inhabitants of their territories.
- inuit
- a member of an Indigenous people living in northern Canada and parts of Greenland and Alaska.
- iroquois
- a member of a former confederacy of six Indigenous peoples of North America
- longhouse
- A building historically used for communal dwelling by the Iroquois and some other Indigenous peoples of North America.
- nomadic
- Roaming about from place to place aimlessly, frequently, or without a fixed pattern of movement.
- precolonial
- Occurring or existing before the beginning of colonial rule.
- sedentary
- Living in groups permanently in one place.
- spirituality
- The quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.
- subsistence
- The action or fact of maintaining or supporting oneself at a minimum level.
- territory
- An area of land under the jurisdiction of a ruler or state.
- three Sisters
- Corn, squash, and climbing beans, traditionally grown together in a companion planting system by some Indigenous peoples in North and Central America.
- trade networks
- The interconnected systems of exchange that facilitate the movement of goods, services, and ideas across regions and cultures.
- wampum
- Small cylindrical beads traditionally made by some Indigenous peoples in North America from shells, strung together and worn as decoration or used ceremonially or in trading.
