This glossary is about terms that can be useful in the mechanical engineering industry in shops or bigger factory. It will cover a large portion of the many specific parts that compose the immensely large industry that is mine such as day to day vocabulary, abbreviation and more niche words that are more unknown to most people
CAD ( computer aided design)
NOUN ADJECTIVE NOUN
CAD (computer-aided design) is the use of computer-based software to aid in design processes by creating simulations of real-world objects. CAD software is frequently used by different types of engineers, designers, architects, creators and drafters to create two-dimensional (2D) drawings or three-dimensional (3D) models.

caliper
Noun
an instrument for measuring external or internal dimensions, having two hinged legs resembling a pair of compasses and in-turned or out-turned points.
Example: I used the caliper to measure the exterior diameter of the shaft

CAM( computer aided manufacturing)

CAM (computer-aided manufacturing), also known as computer-aided modeling or computer-aided machining is the use of software to control machine tools in the manufacturing of work pieces
Example: Mastercam is a good software to do CAM.

Chuck
noun
Lathe chuck represents a vital component of the lathe, being mounted on the headstock spindle. The primary function of these components is to secure the workpieces during the rotational process
Example: What chuck are you using on the lathe?

Coolant

A coolant is a liquid or gas used in machining to reduce heat, lubricate the cutting tool, and improve the overall cutting process
Example: Hey Max, did you open the coolant valve on the lathe to prevent heating on the part and tool

Lathe
noun
a machine for shaping wood, metal, or other material by means of a rotating drive which turns the piece being worked on against changeable cutting tools.
Example: A lathe is the easiest machine that can be used to create a circular part

Lubrification
Noun
the action of applying a substance such as oil or grease to an engine or component so as to minimize friction and allow smooth movement
Example: Lubrification is crucial to prevent friction between 2 parts

Machining

Machining is a manufacturing process where a desired shape or part is created using the controlled removal of material, most often metal, from a larger piece of raw material by cutting. Machining is a form of subtractive manufacturing
Example: I'll create this part by using the lathe machine, which is one way to do machining

Metrology
noun
Applied, technical or industrial metrology is concerned with the application of measurement to manufacturing and other processes and their use in society, ensuring the suitability of measurement instruments, their calibration and quality control.
Example: Metrology is an important part of the creation of a part to set tolerances and insure that the part will be functional

Mill

Tool used in milling to give shapes to a piece of metal or another material
Example: Did you made the part with a end mill or a face mill?

Quality control

Quality control is the process used in manufacturing and engineering to ensure that a product or service meets the required standards of quality.
Example: Hey Max, was the part inspected in the quality control department or not

Tolerance
Noun
Tolerance in engineering is defined as the permissible limit or limits of variation in dimensions, properties, or conditions
Example: the lenght this part is suppose to have is .500'' and the tolerance is +- 0.003'', my measurement was .504 so i'm not in the tolerance.

Torque
Noun, verb
Torque is a measure of the rotational force applied to an object, calculated as the product of the force and the distance from the pivot point at which the force is applied.
Example: Did you torque that bolt to 50 Newton-meters

Vice
Used in milling machines and CNC setups, machine vices are designed to hold workpieces rigidly during machining
Example: I did my setup on the cnc machine with the vice
