Hello everyone, my name is Alexandra, and I am studying in Visual Arts. In addition, this is my second years in this program and my glossary is for everyone who had an interest in creativity. More specifically, this glossary contain twenty words in relation with art. Each word will have a definition, a sentence for using word correctly and an audio to help you guy with your pronunciation, with, sometime, a picture.
abstract art

An art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.
Example: Circles illustrated his intense interest in and sympathetic feeling for abstract art, which was dominant throughout his life.

A creative approach refers to the unique methods and strategies employed by artists to generate original ideas and solve problems in their work.
Example: Alongside my personal studies in the visual arts, I have diversified my artistic approach to find a balance between my need to create visual artworks or mosaics commissioned by galleries, institutions and companies and my cultural mediation initiatives.

artistic movement

An art movement is a tendency or style in art with a specific art philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a specific period of time, (usually a few months, years or decades) or, at least, with the heyday of the movement defined within a number of years.
Example: Cultural Materialism allows us to 'make sense' of the text as part of a political ARTISTIC MOVEMENT which used art as the basis of a social critique of conservative expectations.

atmospheric perspective

In art, especially painting, aerial perspective or atmospheric perspective refers to the technique of creating an illusion of depth by depicting distant objects as paler, less detailed, and usually bluer than near objects.
Example: The painting above shows ATMOSPHERIC PERSPECTIVE and I picked this image because it shows the fading colour of the different planes well.

canvas

A strong, coarse unbleached cloth made from hemp, flax, cotton, or a similar yarn, used to make items such as sails and tents and as a surface for oil painting.
Example: This makes sense, as dramas are fundamentally visual spectacles, time however can be portrayed through the use of background features (e.g. a sunset painted on a CANVAS), or through the use of a narrator.

A circle with different colored sectors used to show the relationship between colors.
Example: Choose from an endless color wheel of cool or warm tints to set the mood.

Combining in such a way as enhancing or emphasize the qualities of each other or another.
Example: When bringing together processes which are similar, with the same characteristics, it will add to the research itself, in this case integration is seen not as synergy, but as COMPLEMENTARY.

diptych

A painting, especially an altarpiece, on two hinged wooden panels which may be closed like a book.
Example: The first two seasons of The Handmaid's Tale form a loose diptych, mirroring and subverting each other in fascinating ways.

Example: As a transitive dynamic verb it animates movement, creating a visual image of blood DRIPPING down in a tear-like manner while possibly mirroring the boxer's opponent's fall.

The process or technique of laying on paint or pigment thickly so that it stands out from a surface.
Example: The thick impasto of the hydrangeas above the figure matches the lushness of the blossom itself.

A design or form carved in relief on a block of linoleum.
Example: Dillyn Adamo discovered that adapting her favorite medium of linocut printmaking to pieces of the forest made her feel closer to nature.

Representation or imitation of the real world in art and literature
A portrait of an artist produced or created by that artist
Example: Visitors were encouraged to get their own pictures taken in the booth, and to place these alongside his self-portrait.

shade
noun
A color, especially with regard to how light or dark it is or as distinguished from one nearly like it.
Example: The image has been shot in a far colder and more unsettling blue TONE rather than the warm orange and gold TONE of the wheat field however the music has not changed and thus the same mournful atmosphere is present but this time accompanied by a much harsher wind which acts as a means to bring us into the reality of war in ancient times when coupled with the colder blue TONE.

stencil

A thin sheet of cardboard, plastic, or metal with a pattern or letters cut out of it, used to produce the cut design on the surface below by the application of ink or paint through the holes.
Example: The walls of the living room had a delicate vine stencil drawn on them.

A painting or drawing of an arrangement of objects, typically including fruit and flowers and objects contrasting with these in texture, such as bowls and glassware.
Example: He forms of art he adopted was still life, especially fruit and flower pieces, painting both in oil and water-colours; he occasionally painted landscapes.

wash
noun
Wash is a term for a visual arts technique resulting in a semi-transparent layer of colour.
Example: During the identified intervention, I feel that I made the most use of situational reflection, reminding Peter that he had breakfast in front of him and a spoon in his hand and then later in his bedroom using this same technique to get him to focus on the WASH cloth in his hand.

watercolor
noun
Artists' paint made with a water-soluble binder such as gum Arabic, and thinned with water rather than oil, giving a transparent color.
Example: He does his conceptualizing with watercolor sketches and with models photographed under anticipated lighting conditions.
