Geological Prospection Glossary.

20 Prospecting in the north terms

My name is Malie Lalonde Delisle and I have been in my program for now one year and a half. I'm writing this glossary for my teacher Luiz Lima. I will talk about geology and prospecting in the north. It is the first step to find an ore body to have a future mine. Geologists spend their day walking in the forest to find rock outcrops. They look if there are interesting minerals in it. They take samples that will be brought in a laboratory for analyzation. My glossary will help people to get more familiar with prospecting and geology word. The glossary will contain 20 words with pronunciation, definition, translation, example and image. I picked the most used word in prospection. I will find the definitions in Google. Try to learn those word so that you can have a conversation with others.

claim
noun
A mining claim is a specific parcel of public land staked by a prospector or mining company to secure the rights to explore for, develop, and extract locatable mineral deposits. It grants exclusive, time-limited possession for mining purposes, requiring legal registration and annual work or fees to maintain.
Example: Mining compagnies put a lot of money in claims that they buy.

geological formation
adjective, noun
A body of rock with consistent physical characteristics (lithology) that is distinct enough to be mapped on the surface or traced in the subsurface.
Example: The geologists need to know the geological formation to do the drilling step.

geologist
noun
An expert in or student of geology.
Example: I believe Verne represented his true feelings through the voice of Axel when presenting his arguments against the journey as he knew such a feat could not be undertaken but the professor, with his convincing and logical arguments, persuaded him, as much as the reader, that it could and no budding GEOLOGIST would turn down such an adventurous quest for knowledge.

lithology
noun
The general physical characteristics of a rock or the rocks in a particular area.
Example: The geologist carefully examined the lithology of the canyon walls to determine how the rock layers were formed millions of years ago.

map
noun
A diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.

mine
noun
A mine is generally defined as a site where mineral deposits are located, which may include both underground and surface operations. While underground excavations are typically classified as mines, surface operations like rock quarries also fall under this category.
Example: This is particularly the case on the route down to the underground MINE and it may be necessary to install steps with proper handrails.
