I made this glossary because I really like to be a farmer, and I want to share with people some equipment, and animals I work with because I like my job.
anvil
noun
A heavy steel or iron block with a flat top, concave sides, and typically a pointed end, on which metal can be hammered and shaped.
Example: The blacksmith rested the hot metal on the anvil before shaping it with a hammer.

bearing puller
noun
A specialized, durable, tool-grade steel device designed to safely remove bearings, gears, pulleys, and couplings from shafts or housings without causing damage.
Example: The mechanic used a bearing puller to remove the worn bearing from the shaft without damaging it.

bolus
noun
A large, solid, controlled-release tablet or capsule administered orally, designed to lodge in the rumen or reticulum to provide a slow release of nutrients, medication, or supplements over weeks or months.
Example: The veterinarian administered a bolus of calcium to the cow after calving to prevent milk fever.

bolus applicator
noun
A specialized, long-handled mechanical tool used in veterinary medicine to orally administer large tablets or capsules—known as boluses—into the rumen of livestock such as cattle, sheep, and goats.

A young bovine animal, especially a domestic cow or bull in its first year.
Example: The baby calf is born this morning.

A hinged metal hook at the end of a long handle, used for gripping and rolling logs.

Is a primary tillage implement, usually tractor-mounted, designed to break up compacted soil at depths of 8–12 inches without inverting it.
Example: While working in the field, the farmer used a chisel plow to break up compacted soil before planting.

colostrum
noun
The thick, yellowish, nutrient-dense "first milk" produced by mammals, including humans and cows, during late pregnancy and the first few days after birth.
Example: As part of the morning farm work, the calf was fed fresh colostrum to ensure it got the nutrients it needed.

cow
feminine noun
A fully grown female animal of a domesticated breed, and kept to produce milk or beef.

Example: Another way in which they could be seen to be not protecting the environment is building a new dairy to house 600 dairy cows.

An implement consisting of a heavy frame set with teeth or tines which is dragged over plowed land to break up clods, remove weeds, and cover seed.
Example: After plowing, the farmer pulled a harrow across the field to break up clumps of soil and level the ground.

hay rake
noun
A hay rake is an agricultural implement used to collect cut hay or straw into rows (windrows) for easier, efficient collection by balers or loader wagons.
Example: During afternoon farm work, he used a hay rake to gather the cut grass into neat rows for baling.

heifer

Heifers are female cows who have not yet given birth to a calf.
Example: The heifer is going to give birth in 4 months.

milking machine

A mechanical device used in dairy farming to automatically extract milk from animals like cows, goats, and sheep, replacing manual hand-milking.
Example: This morning, a farmer milked his cow using a milking machine.

A machine used for cutting grass.
Example: The farmer used the mower to cut the tall grass in the field before it could get too dry.

plow
noun
A large farming implement with one or more blades fixed in a frame, drawn by a tractor or by animals and used for cutting furrows in the soil and turning it over, especially to prepare for the planting of seeds.
Example: In the spring, the farmer prepared the field by turning the soil with a plow.

PTO (power-take-off)
noun
A mechanical system that transfers power from a vehicle’s engine or transmission to auxiliary equipment, such as hydraulic pumps, cranes, or agricultural implements.
Example: The tractor’s PTO was used to power the baler, making it much easier to collect the hay.

refractometer
noun
A scientific instrument that measures the refractive index (how much light bends) of bovine colostrum by measuring its IgG antibody concentration, which directly correlates to the amount of light refraction.
Example: The farmer used a refractometer to measure the quality of the cow’s colostrum before feeding it to the calf.

rumen
noun
The first stomach of a ruminant, which receives food or cud from the esophagus, partly digests it with the aid of bacteria, and passes it to the reticulum.
Example: The vet explained that the cow’s rumen needed time to adjust when switching to a new type of feed.

teat bath cup

A teat dip cup (or teat bath cup) is a hand-held dairy tool used for applying disinfectant to a cow or goat's udder teats before or after milking to prevent a mastitis.

A specialized, durable dispenser designed to easily open, empty, and seal Big Bags (bulk bags) containing free-flowing materials like fertilizer, seeds, or gravel.
Example: The workers used a vidbag to seal the large bag of seed before transporting it to the storage shed.
