A piece of furniture for sleep or rest, typically a framework with a mattress and coverings.
Example: Assonance in the first line (st ai rs ag a in b ea ring tr a y) draws out speech and gives a feeling of weariness; it also echoes the sound of Dunn's footsteps upon the stairs, an action he became so familiar with whilst his wife was ill in BED, and he now repeats.

A floor is the bottom, load-supporting surface of a room, building, or vehicle upon which people walk.
Example: The larger of the two, House 1, interpreted as a dwelling, consisted of two rooms with a stone partition and partially paved FLOOR; a probable secondary context of a massive trough quern suggested at least two phases of occupation (Ritchie, 1983: 42-43).

A reflective surface, now typically of glass coated with a metal amalgam, that reflects a clear image.
Example: The basic schematic of the laser (figure 2.4 adapted from (5) ), shows how the laser medium is contained within a cavity, with one totally reflective MIRROR, and a partially reflective MIRROR (only allowing light to pass through when a threshold intensity has been reached). The mirrors only allow the build up of stimulated emission parallel to the length of the cavity, so the photons all have the same alignment and coherence.

A sofa is a long, upholstered piece of furniture with a back and arms, designed for two or more people to sit on comfortably, originating from the Arabic word "suffah" (a bench/platform) and meaning a soft, cushioned seat for relaxation.
Example: This took place in the living room of one of the participant's houses and the members of the group sat in a relaxed structure, either on the floor or on the SOFA, surrounding the table upon which the tape recorder was positioned.

A continuous vertical brick or stone structure that encloses or divides an area of land.
Example: The Shaft Grave was deliberately located just outside the fortification (ensuring visibility for those inside and outside the WALL) and the burial was on ground that was not soft and unsuitable to digging. There were no other internments nearby and subsequent works on the walls did not affect the Shaft Grave (Kilian-Dirlmeier, 1995: 50; Kilian-Dirlmeier, 1997: 67-68, 72).
