capitalism

An economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit.
Example: It coincided with the rise of industrialism and capitalism and also a higher appreciation of the importance of the individual.

The arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.

democracy
noun
A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
Example: Thus, Olson does not claim a causal relationship between democracy and economic growth, but that democracy and sustained growth - requiring the same set of institutions - will occur simultaneously.

dialectic
noun
The art of investigating or discussing the truth of opinions.
Example: Dworkin's amalgamation of natural law and formalism is akin to Hegel's system of dialectics; synthesising a resolving theory from antithetical concepts.

geography
noun
The study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and of human activity as it affects and is affected by these, including the distribution of populations and resources, land use, and industries.
Example: Breeds The first consideration in any livestock system is what breed will give the best outputs and is adapted to survive the local geography and climate of an area.

The study of past events, particularly in human affairs.
Example: Throughout the span of human history many societies and civilisations have risen and fallen, many of these societies have approached the disposal of the dead with a great reverence and ritual. Generally the funeral rites and practices would take days, weeks, months and in some cases years to plan and put into action. They were and still are seen as an important part of separating world of the living from the world of the dead.

A man, woman, or child of the species Homo sapiens or other (extinct) species of the genus Homo ; a human being.
Example: However, employees with a high need for affiliation can sometimes enjoy working with stock as the company of the cattle is a slight substititute to that of humans.

A supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
Example: In reply, proponents of the USO's hypothesis and especially Richard Wrangham, argue that if cooked, tubers could fulfil all the dietary requirements.

noun
A system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy.
Example: Our knowledge can change surprisingly quicky due to the changes in technology, new evidence, influence of a certain ideology and approach.

noun
A society or organization founded for a religious, educational, social, or similar purpose.
Example: It is important to note that partnership considers trade unions as secondary institutions.

patriarchy
noun
A system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line.
Example: Liberalism, separating public and private spheres suppresses equality, affording patriarchy a curtain of protection: the home, the battleground of women.

noun
The study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline.
Example: Athenian men were willing to converse with their hetaira on matters of philosophy and converse at the symposia but most would not have regarded their wives as suitable for discussions.

The branch of knowledge that deals with systems of government; the analysis of political activity and behavior.
Example: If the poll is extended to include presidents up to the present day, the results are similar; 16.9 against 25.89 for non-conflict presidents (from a survey of 85 "prominent professors of history, law, political science and economics" conducted in 2005).

noun
The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context.
Example: Whilst there are some clear distinctions between psychology and sociology: Sociologists aim is to "... understand the individuals place in the world, where they are, what they do and what their views are"; Whereas Psychologists study behaviour and the "thoughts feelings and motivations underlying such behaviour".

qualitative research
noun and adjective
A method of inquiry that explores and understands the "why" and "how" of human behavior, experiences, and social phenomena rather than "how many".
Example: Qualitative research involves findings that are not arrived at by statistical or other quantitative procedures.

quantitative research

The process of collecting and analyzing numerical data.
Example: In quantitative research emphasis is based on controlling and manipulating variables.

socialization
noun
The process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society.
Example: An example of this is provided by Carlson and Kangun (1988) who suggest that birth order affects socialization because eldest children are socialized by adults while youngest children receive less attention from their parents and are socialized by their older siblings instead.

The aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community.
Example: The term taboo can be applied to a broad range of ideas in any society, and is difficult to grasp precisely.

The study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society.

urbanization

The process of making an area more urban.
Example: They hypothesised that urbanization and industrialisation led to increased education for women as well as role expansion in the public sphere, which in turn helped to enhance the formation and spread of gender consciousness and the amassing of personal and collective resources necessary to mount a movement (Chafetz and Dworkin, 1986 cited in Margolis 1993: 368).
