22 The Individual terms

My name is Coraly. I am a student at Montmorency College. I've been studying Social Science for the past five semesters. I am in the Individual branch of Sciences. I am creating this glossary for you to be able to understand different terms that can be used in my field of study. This glossary will be composed of at least 20 different terms. The method I will be using to find the definitions is Google.

anti-social
noun
Contrary to the laws and customs of society; devoid of or antagonistic to sociable instincts or practices.
Example: This research shows just how important environmental factors are in development, a child may have a genetic disposition towards delinquent behaviour, but the occurrence of an ANTI-SOCIAL behaviour is dramatically increased if the parenting style is incorrect, and the child is allowed to mix with deviant peers.

A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.
Example: Physical isolation heightens ANXIETY, and lengthy periods of detention increase the need for escape.

A mental health condition that affects the way people feel about themselves and others, making it hard to function in everyday life. It includes a pattern of unstable, intense relationships, as well as impulsiveness and an unhealthy way of seeing themselves.
Example: In a pre-PACE case, Miller, a BORDERLINE mentally ill, was "bullied and hectored" through repetitive accusations by police until a confession was elicited after more than 300 denials.

A mental condition characterized by feelings of severe despondency and dejection, typically also with feelings of inadequacy and guilt, often accompanied by lack of energy and disturbance of appetite and sleep.
Example: Men on the other hand are more likely to turn to drink and drugs as solutions for DEPRESSION and mental problems (Helman 2000).

A person who is predominantly focused on internal thoughts and feelings rather than on external things or social interaction, often characterized as being quiet or withdrawn.
Example: Using this analysis, the culture at C.C.C. can be defined as encouraging INTROVERT personalities (i.e. prone to withdraw into themselves and aiming to achieve personal goals).

Example: It is these severe psychological disorders which cannot be treated by a strictly behavioural approach - although behaviour modification can help with some effects, there is no effective therapy for NARCISSISM itself, (Young, 1990).

A deeply ingrained pattern of behaviour of a specified kind that deviates markedly from the norms of generally accepted behavior, typically apparent by the time of adolescence, and causing long-term difficulties in personal relationships or in functioning in society.
Example: Antisocial PERSONALITY DISORDER is also known as psychopathy, sociopathy or dissocial PERSONALITY DISORDER.

A person consistently exhibiting antisocial, impulsive, manipulative, and sometimes aggressive behavior (not in current technical use).
Example: If it were kept isolated during the critical period nothing would prevent it from becoming an affectionless PSYCHOPATH for the remainder of its life.

Key symptoms include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things not there), delusions (false beliefs), disorganized thinking, and reduced motivation or emotional expression
