20 Physics and engineering terms

Hi, my name is Daphno-Jamal Talabert. I live in Mascouche. I have been studying Pure and Applied sciences at Montmorency College for two years, and my main field of study is physics. The glossary I made serves as a tool for new students interested in furthering their knowledge in my field of study. Each word of this glossary is related to common concepts used in physics and engineering. Each word in this glossary was carefully chosen, so anyone could learn about physics.

acceleration
noun
The rate of change of the velocity of an object with respect to time.
Example: His acceleration decreased as he got closer to the finish line.
In vacuum (no air resistance), objects attracted by Earth gain speed at a steady rate.
dynamics
adjective
The study of forces and their effect on motion.
Movement of each of the components of the Boulton & Watt Steam Engine (1784) can be described by a set of equations of kinematics and kinetics.
energy
noun
The quantitative property that is transferred to a body or to a physical system, recognizable in the performance of work and in the form of heat and light.
Example: Heating a stove requires energy.
force
noun
An influence that can cause an object to change its velocity, unless counterbalanced by other forces, or its shape.
Example: Lifting this rock requires a lot of force.

free fall
noun
Any motion of a body where gravity is the only force acting upon it.
Example: The apple fell from the counter, it was a free fall.
A parachutist falls the ground, with the only force applied onto him being the gravitational force.
friction
noun
The force resisting the relative motion of solid surfaces, fluid layers, and material elements sliding against each other.[.
Example: There was a lot of friction between him and the slide.
Friction between two objects. The blue one has more friction against the sloped surface than the green one.
inertia
noun
Natural tendency of objects in motion to stay in motion and objects at rest to stay at rest, unless a force causes its velocity to change.
Example: The inertia kept him from stopping his movement.
Kinetics
adjective
The branch of classical mechanics that is concerned with the relationship between motion and its causes, specifically, forces and torques.
mass
noun
A measure of the amount of matter.
Example: He has a lot of mass on his body.

material
noun
Substance or mixture of substances that constitutes an object.
Example: His favorite material is wood.
Examples of popular building materials.
mechanics
adjective
The area of physics concerned with the relationships between force, matter, and motion among physical objects.
Example: Solving this problem requires the use of classical mechanics.
momentum
noun
The product of the mass and velocity of an object.
Example: After he hit the balls, they gained a lot of momentum.
Momentum of a pool cue ball is transferred to the racked balls after collision.
motion
noun
When an object changes its position with respect to a reference point in a given time. Motion is mathematically described in terms of displacement, distance, velocity, acceleration, speed, and frame of reference to an observer, measuring the change in position of the body relative to that frame with a change in time.
Example: While running, the man was in motion.
A car is moving in high speed during a championship, with respect to the ground the position is changing according to time hence the car is in relative motion
power
noun
The amount of energy transferred or converted per unit time.
Example: Transferring energy to that light bulb requires a lot of power.
Resonance
noun
The tendency of a system to absorb more energy at its resonance frequency in a given process.
The result of the resonance of an air column spreading its sound wave onto the next air column.
statics
adjective
The branch of classical mechanics that is concerned with the analysis of force and torque acting on a physical system that does not experience an acceleration, but rather is in equilibrium with its environment.
Example: He used statics to explain the structure of the building.
An example of a weight being held in a static motion by strings.
torque
noun
The rotational correspondent of linear force.
Example: Holding the wrench further away from the center adds additional torque
Relationship between force F, torque τ, linear momentum p, and angular momentum L in a system which has rotation constrained to only one plane (forces and moments due to gravity and friction not considered).
vector
noun
A term that refers to quantities that cannot be expressed by a single number (a scalar), or to elements of some vector spaces.
A vector pointing from point A to point B
velocity
noun
The measurement of speed in a certain direction of motion.
Example: He constantly changes velocity while running.
As a change of direction occurs while the racing cars turn on the curved track, their velocity is not constant even if their speed is.
weight
noun
A quantity associated with the gravitational force exerted on the object by other objects in its environment.
Example: He weighs more on Earth than on the Moon.
A representation the effect of the Earth's gravitational pull on our weight.
