This glossary will help you understand and learn new words in marketing and in sales. This glossary contains 20 words with 10 words from a sales field, and 10 words from a marketing field.
- AIDA
- acronym
- An acronym that stands for Attention/Awareness, Interest, Desire, and Action that is used in sales. They are the four steps of the now somewhat-outdated Purchase Funnel, wherein customers travel from awareness to purchase.
- Backlinks
- noun
- Links on websites other than your own that go back to a page on your website. Backlinks are also called inbound links because they represent traffic coming to your website from somewhere else.

- Bad Leads
- "bad" is an adjective, and "leads" is a noun
- Potential customers who are poor fit for a product or service and are unlikely to convert into paying customers.
- Breadcrumbs

- They’re a form of website navigation that shows users the sections they’ve visited in the order they visited them so they can retrace their steps easily.
- Buyer Persona
- noun
- A semi-fictional representation of your ideal customer bases on real data and market research about existing customers.
- Churn Rate
- noun
- A metric that measures in percentage how many customers you retain and at what value.
- CPM
- noun
- Cost per thousand impressions of an online ad. When an ad is served to a user, it’s counted as an impression.
- Crawler

- A program used by search engines to browse, analyse and collect data from web pages in order to index them.
- Domain
- noun
- A domain or domain name is what comes between the "@" in your email address and the ".com", ".org", ".net", etc. (for example, yourname@domain.com).
- End User

- The person who uses a product or service. If you make T-shirts, a person wearing your shirt is the end user.
- Margin
- noun
- The difference between a product or service's selling price and the cost of production.
- Markup
- noun
- Refers to a price increase for a product or service.
- Newsjacking
- noun
- Taking advantage of current news or trending topics to align with your own product or brand in order to gain attention and stay relevant.
- Pain Point
- noun
- A part of a process or system that causes problems or obstructions that a sales rep needs to identify in the selling process.
- Pipeline
- noun
- The step-by-step process sales reps go through to convert a prospect into a customer.
- Psychographics
- noun
- Your target audience’s values, beliefs, and behaviors that are relevant to your product or service.
- Referral
- noun
- It's when a website sends traffic to another website.
- Sound Bite
- noun
- A series of words or phrases sales reps used to respond to and overcome a customer objection.
- Up-Selling

- The time when a sales rep sells an existing customer a higher-end version of the product that a customer originally bought.
