Natural Science glossary

15 natural science terms

Hello, my name is Merieme, and I'm studying in Natural Science. This glossary is for people who are in the same program as me or are just curious about it. So, in this glossary, I will talk about what we do in this program. Essentially, I will explain fifteen tools that are used in biology so that it will help you if one day you use them. Don't worry, I will tell you their definitions and also show you some images of each of the words I chose. I selected these terms based on how much you will use them, using reliable sources like Wikipedia and Google. Finally, when you guys finish reading this glossary, I hope you will also learn some materials we use in a chemistry class.

beaker
noun
"A lipped cylindrical glass container for laboratory use."
Example: "5.2g solid the solid was transferred and dissolved in about 100cm 3 distilled water to a 250cm 3 BEAKER use a glass stirring rod to break up larger crystals the solution was transferred and made up to a 250cm 3 graduated flask with distilled water (bottom of the meniscus of the solution is just at the horizontal mark of the flask) the flask was inverted (with the thumb on the stopper) several times to ensure the solution is well mixed NaOH (aq) was run down to a 50.00cm 3 burette, so that the tube below the tap is also filled up."
fr: gobelet

Centrifuge
noun
"A machine with a rapidly rotating container that applies centrifugal force to its contents, typically to separate fluids of different densities (e.g. cream from milk) or liquids from solids."
Example: "As it is difficult to separate the small fat globules in homgenised (eg.sterilised ) milk, it is advisable to re-CENTRIFUGE after warming in the 65ËšC bath until it reaches a maximum."
fr: Centrifuger

gloves
noun
"A covering for the hand worn for protection against cold or dirt and typically having separate parts for each finger and the thumb."
Example: " HCL (corrosie) Sodium Nitrite (Toxic) Phenol (Toxic) Sodium Hydroxide(Corrosive) Precautions to be taken, appropriate lab wear to be worn at all times including, lab coat, goggles, GLOVES and hair tied back. All work is to be carried out in the fume hood."
fr: gants

Graduated cylinder
noun
"A graduated cylinder is a cylindrical tube used for measuring volumes of liquids. A volume of liquid is the amount of liquid an object can hold. Knowing the volume is important because many of the experiments scientists conduct involve accurately measuring liquids."
Example: "When we want to measure a volume in biology we use a graduated cylinder to transfer this liquid to another container."
fr: Cylindre gradué
Graduated cylinder
incubator
noun
"An apparatus used to hatch eggs or grow microorganisms under controlled conditions."
Example: "Artificial incubators come in many different forms and sizes; some hatcheries have rooms of incubators in the form of incubation trays. Whatever the size the INCUBATOR needs to have a constant temperature and a turning system as well as some form of moisture, as the eggs will lose 12% of their total weight during the incubation period due to water lost. The INCUBATOR also needs to have some form of ventilation so air can flow freely over the eggs. These photographs demonstrate the difference in INCUBATOR size; Photograph from Photograph form Eggs can be incubated up to two weeks after they have been laid as long as they are kept between 45 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit. 90% of fertile eggs that are incubated by hens or artificially will hatch successfully."
fr: incubateur
Incubator
lab coat
noun
"A white protective coat worn by workers in a laboratory."
Example: " HCL (corrosie) Sodium Nitrite (Toxic) Phenol (Toxic) Sodium Hydroxide(Corrosive) Precautions to be taken, appropriate lab wear to be worn at all times including, LAB COAT, goggles, gloves and hair tied back."
fr: blouse de laboratoire
lab coat
microscope
noun
"An optical instrument used for viewing very small objects, such as mineral samples or animal or plant cells, typically magnified several hundred times."
Example: "Forward genetics often utilizes embryos from maternal-effect-lethal-bearing mothers (mutant embryos) of an egg-laying defective mother. [11] [6] Screening of specific embryonic terminal arrest phenotypes can be done through the mother's transparent cuticle using a compound MICROSCOPE. [7] [12] Ablate particular cells by laser or remove cells through a puncture in the eggshell [13] [14] to create partial embryos can be used to assist the analysis."
fr: microscope
microscope
microscope slides
noun
"A microscope slide is a thin flat piece of glass, typically 75 by 26 mm (3 by 1 inches) and about 1 mm thick, used to hold objects for examination under a microscope. Typically the object is mounted (secured) on the slide, and then both are inserted together in the microscope for viewing."
Example: "To be able to microscopically examine a substance we must first place it on top of a microscope slide."
fr: lames de microscope
mircoscope slides
petri plate
noun
"A Petri dish (alternatively known as a Petri plate or cell-culture dish) is a shallow transparent lidded dish that biologists use to hold growth medium in which cells can be cultured, originally, cells of bacteria, fungi and small mosses."
Example: "To cultivate bacteria, a biologist can, for example, place nutrients as well as bacteria in a PETRI PLATE to evaluate their growth and evolution."
fr: Boîte de petri
petri plate
pipettes
noun
"A slender tube attached to or incorporating a bulb, for transferring or measuring out small quantities of liquid, especially in a laboratory."
Example: " Method 25ml PIPETTES were used in place of 20ml PIPETTES. Results Preperation of Standard sodium hydroxide solution Determination of total acidity of vinegar Calculations Potassium hydrogen phthalate is a primary standard. I.e. you can make it up to exact molarity. Sodium hydroxide is not. It takes up CO2 from the air and changes with time. 25ml of 0.05M phthalate should react with 25ml of 0.05M NaOH, but our titre was 25.9ml = 0.0259 dm³ i.e. our NaOH is weaker."

safety glasses
noun
"Toughened glasses or goggles for protecting the eyes when using power tools or industrial or laboratory equipment."
Example: " Other: Glass vacuum apparatus (wear SAFETY GLASSES) Appropriate lab wear must be worn including lab coat, gloves and goggles. All Chemical work should be carried out in a fume hood. Procedure: To begin the apparatus are set up; the boiling vessel (Cottrell pump), condenser and ballast flask are connected; in turn this is connected to a pressure gauge and the pressure gauge to the vacuum pump."
fr: lunettes de sécurité

scalpel
noun
"A knife with a small, sharp, sometimes detachable blade, as used by a surgeon."
Example: "For a frog dissection we must use a scalpel."
fr: scalpel
scalpel
Spectrophotometer
noun
"An apparatus for measuring the intensity of light in a part of the spectrum, especially as transmitted or emitted by particular substances."
Example: "Calibration Curve (methods devised by Ryan Pounder and Andrew Turner) The starting crystal violet solution was prepared in a ratio of 1:3 stock solution:water resulting in crystal violet concentration of 5.52 x 10 -5 mol dm -3 . The absorbance of this was recorded by removing an aliquot of the solution and placing it into a cuvette that was placed into a UV SPECTROPHOTOMETER."

Test tube
noun
"A thin glass tube closed at one end, used to hold small amounts of material for laboratory testing or experiments."
Example: "A systematic error may have occurred in the mass measurement such as if the scales were not tared and instead under read the masses. Although this would affect all masses that were measured by adding X grams to the each mass measured, if taken as a proportion of the mass this would mean that the composition of KBr could be greater than 50% and so would translate the a mix point horizontally, moving it closer to the line. When the substances were combined by melting them in a TEST TUBE a small element of the glass may have also melted and combined with the substances."
fr: Éprouvette
Test tube
thermometer
noun
"An instrument for measuring and indicating temperature, typically one consisting of a narrow, hermetically sealed glass tube marked with graduations and having at one end a bulb containing mercury or alcohol that expands and contracts in the tube with heating and cooling."
Example: "The range of uncertainty on temperature was thus calculated for both thermometers at 20°C, and found to be: Therefore the platinum film THERMOMETER can be said to have the superior measurement accuracy at 20°C. The calibration errors are also of smaller magnitudes for the platinum film THERMOMETER (of orders of 10 -4 and 10 -2 ) than for the thermistor THERMOMETER (orders of 10 1 and10 -2 ). If measurement accuracy were the most important consideration, then the platinum film THERMOMETER would appear to be the instrument of choice, as smaller calibration errors will equate to lower uncertainty values"
