Mineral technology glossary
Mineral technology glossary
20 terms
Mineral technology is a program where you learn how a mine works, and how to manage It effectively. Also, this program show you everything about minerals and their formation from the beginning. Mineral technology show the student how to concentrate the product after being extracted from the mine. This glossary could be useful for the new student who doesn't know those terms, and some of them are frequently used, so it is important for the student to understand their meaning.
- deposit
- A natural occurrence of a mineral resource that has economic potential for future exploitation project.
- diagenesis
- The physical and chemical changes occurring during the conversion of sediment to sedimentary rock.
- drilling
- The process of creating boreholes to explore mineral deposits or extract minerals.
- exploration
- The search for mineral resources using geological surveys, geophysical studies, and drilling.
- gangue
- The non-valuable minerals that are extracted with ore.
- hydrometallurgy
- A method of extracting metals from ores using aqueous chemistry techniques.
- igneous rock
- Rock formed from cooled magma or lava.
- lithology
- The study of rocks, the character of a rock formation and his characteristics.
- metamorphic rock
- Rock that has been transformed by heat, pressure, or chemical processes.
- open-pit mining
- Mining method where rocks & minerals are removed from an open pit near the surface.
- ore
- A naturally occurring solid material from which a metal or valuable mineral can be profitably extracted.
- petrology
- The branch of geology that studies the origin, composition, and structure of rocks.
- pyrometallurgy
- The process of extracting and refining metals using high temperatures.
- room and pillar mining
- An underground mining technique in which the mined material is extracted across a horizontal plane, creating horizontal arrays of rooms and pillars.
- schistosity
- A type of foliation in metamorphic rocks caused by pressure and heat, affecting mineral alignment.
- sedimentary rock
- Rock formed by the accumulation of mineral and organic particles.
- stratigraphy
- Stratigraphy is a branch of geology concerned with the study of rock layers and layering.
- strip mining
- A open-pit mining technique that involves removing large strips of soil and rock to expose mineral deposits.
- underground mining
- Mining technique where the ore is extracted under the surface using tunnels and shafts.
- vein
- A fracture in rock containing a deposit of minerals or ore and typically having an extensive course underground.
