The job of a nurse is to care for sick people and help them get better on a daily basis, the glossary is used by patients who do not understand medical terms to better understand the language of a nurse. If the patient does not understand everything from the beginning, it does not matter because he will be able to regrit the glossary to help him better understand and know what he has and what it is for.
- armband
- a strip of cloth etc worn round the arm
- catheter
- a thin tube that is put into your body in order to remove a liquid such as blood or urine
- convalescence
- rest period after operation
- drain
- to put in a drain to clean up a wound
- hemorrhage
- (medical) bleeding in large amounts, from damaged blood-vessels
- IN VITRO
- happening outside the body in artificial conditions, often in a test tube:
- Incision
- to make an incision with a knife
- infection
- development of microbes in the body
- intravenous
- a piece of medical equipment that is used to put a liquid, such as medicine or blood, through a tube into a patient’s vein; drip
- lesion
- (medical) damage to the skin or a body part as the result of injury or illness.
- pacemaker
- an electronic device to make the heart beats regular or stronger
- PRE-OP :
- an abbreviation for preparation, which is the time before a patient’s surgery
- probe
- to throw a sounding line into a lake
- pus
- a thick, yellowish liquid that forms in infected wounds etc.
- scar
- a scar on the arm where the dog bit him.
- stat
- immediately
- stethoscope
- an instrument by which a doctor can listen to the beats of the heart etc.
- stretcher
- to carry a wounded person on a stretcher
- suture
- to stitch up a wound
- thermometer:
- a thin glass (usually a thin, glass tube with mercury in it) used for measuring temperature, especially body temperature meter
