15 Essentials of Psychology terms

Hi, my name is Bianca Robitaille. I am 18 years old. I am from Val-d'Or, Canada. I have been studying Social Science for 3 sessions at Lionel-Groulx College. My field of study is psychology. This glossary is about the essential base of psychology. It is for everyone who doesn't know the essentials words ans wants to learn more about the basic notions of psychology. In psychology, you need some knowledge of introductory vocabulary to go into more details, which is what I wrote in my glossary. All my definitions are from Google and my exemples from Lextutor.

brain
noun
An organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity.
Example: The terrible nervous sequels of some forms of inflammation of the membranes of the brain, again, are due primarily to microbic invasion rather of the membranes than of their nervous contents; and many other diseases may be added to this list.

cerebral cortex
noun
The outer layer of the cerebrum (the cerebral cortex ), composed of folded gray matter and playing an important role in consciousness.
Example: Injury to the cerebral cortex has also been linked to depressive disorders, difficulty in decision-making, lack of impulse control, memory issues, and attention problems

cognition
noun
A term referring to the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension.
Example: Whether disposition is a personal trait, an attitude, cognition, or just a measure of state of mental health is uncertain (Ledford, 1999).More investigations need to be done in this psychological management scope.

Something conceived in the mind: notion.
Example: I will be discussing the assumptions of both the patient and the nurses including patient expectations versus what can be offered, patients rights to access treatment and services, quality of care in relation to patient priorities and the concept of personhood and possible barriers to its provision.

The identification of the nature of an illness or other problem by examination of the symptoms.
Example: However delays of 9-12 years in the diagnosis of diabetes after onset means that one-third to half of all diabetics already have evidence of organ or tissue damage

emotion
noun
A conscious mental reaction (such as anger or fear) subjectively experienced as strong feeling usually directed toward a specific object and typically accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes in the body.
Example: Offering meaning inspired the principles of patriotism as significance and emotion could be attached to the sacrifice which corresponded to the needs of the population who sought a measure of coming to terms with the tragedy.

Example: Therefore, this architectural gift would have appealed to the city's collective memory without signalling the transplantation of foreign spatio-temporal features in the Athenian landscape.

Example: He also has several negative features, including- a flat affect and loss of directed behaviour and motivation.

A persistent disturbing preoccupation with an often unreasonable idea or feeling.
Example: According to (Southern and West 2005) the entrepreneur's classic traits include 'energy, arrogance, hurriedness and obsession with work.

perception
noun
The act or faculty of perceiving, or apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind; cognition; understanding.
Example: In this experiment the same person decided the point at which the solution had turned colourless to minimise this source of error, however other groups may have had a different perception of when the solution was colourless.

The combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character.
Example: The client received a formal diagnosis at the age of 33 of "probable Schizophrenia with paranoid attitude"; prior to this, psychiatrists had thought that he had a psychopathic personality due to a disturbed and insecure childhood.

The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context.
Example: Historians that argue sacrificial behaviour was based on terror may find it hard to fathom the psychology of a victim who chooses to die for his god.

sensation
noun
A mental process (such as seeing, hearing, or smelling) resulting from the immediate external stimulation of a sense organ often as distinguished from a conscious awareness of the sensory process.
Example: The parietal lobes contain the primary sensory cortex which controls sensation such as touch, pressure and pain.

stress
noun
Stress is the body's reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response.
Example: Through this psychoanalytical theory, Demos claimed that the children were faced with extremely difficult psychic tasks and the bizarre behaviour was attributed to the task, so the child was suffering from a post-traumatic stress disorder.
