Hi, I'm Cloe, a biotechnology student at Ahuntsic College in Montreal. I've created this glossary to help people discover new words or simply understand what these words mean. Science is an English-speaking field. That's why I think it's important to know a few scientific vocabulary words to improve your skills. To this end, I've chosen the fifteen most important words that they'll be able to use every day because I already hear and see them a lot in class and in the lab. So, I hope that science students and future scientists will appreciate it.
bacteria
noun
A member of a large group of unicellular microorganisms which have cell walls but lack organelles and an organized nucleus, including some that can cause disease.
Example: Most antibiotics that specifically affect BACTERIA have no effect on organisms in the archaeal or eukarayal domains.

bunsen burner
noun
A small adjustable gas burner used in laboratories.
Example: A BUNSEN BURNER creates and aseptic environment by creating a column of hit rising air.
en: bec bunsen
calculator
noun
Something used for making mathematical calculations, in particular a small electronic device with a keyboard and a visual display.
Example: Of course a computer can be programmed to calculate this a lot faster than in took me to do so with pencil, paper and CALCULATOR.
en: calculatrice
deoxyribonucleic acid
noun
A self-replicating material that is present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information.
Example: It has been shown by genetic sequencing that genes which encode mitochondrial proteins are present on the deoxyribonucleic acid.
en: acide désoxyribonucléique
distilled water
noun
Distilled water is water that has been boiled into vapor and condensed back into liquid in a separate container. Impurities in the original water that do not boil below or near the boiling point of water remain in the original container. Thus, distilled water is a type of purified water.
Example: Procedure:- Sodium thiosulfate (12.4037g) was made up to 250ml with DISTILLED WATER and a trace amount of sodium carbonate added.

laboratory glassware
noun
A variety of equipment used in scientific work, traditionally made of glass.
Example: Prepare your LABORATORY GLASSWARE before starting your experiment.

laboratory notebook
noun
A laboratory notebook is a primary record of research. Researchers use a lab notebook to document their hypotheses, experiments and initial analysis or interpretation of these experiments. The notebook serves as an organizational tool, a memory aid, and can also have a role in protecting any intellectual property that comes from the research.
Example: Use your LABORATORY NOTEBOOK to record your results.

molar concentration
noun
Molar concentration is the number of moles contained in one litre of a substance. The concentration of a solution is expressed in
mol/L
.
Example: The relationship between the solubility (MOLAR CONCENTRATION) and the solubility product (Ks) depends on the charge type of the electrolyte (MX, MX2.
en: concentration molaire
petri dish
noun
A shallow, circular, transparent dish with a flat lid, used for the culture of microorganisms.
Example: Place a filter paper pad in a sterile PETRI DISH and pour 2-3 ml of nutrient medium over the pad.

pictogram
noun
Pictograms are graphic images that immediately show the user of a hazardous product what type of hazard is present. With a quick glance, you can see, for example, that the product is flammable or that it might be a health hazard.
Example: You can find the PICTOGRAMS for the chemical on the simdut sheet.

protective glove
noun
Gloves are protective garments that offer protection to your hands, fingers, thumbs and wrists against particular external forces, chemicals, elements and hazards in the workplace.
Example: There are hundreds of different types of PROTECTIVE GLOVES used in the home and garden for personal use, but safety gloves are more commonly used in the workplace to protect workers against a number of dangers.

scale
noun
An instrument or machine for weighing.
Example: Measure 0.001g sodium hydroxide on a SCALE.
en: balance
spectrophotometer
noun
An apparatus for measuring the intensity of light in a part of the spectrum, especially as transmitted or emitted by particular substances.
Example: Light absorbance, measured by a SPECTROPHOTOMETER, is an indicator of ascorbate concentration.
en: spectrophotomètre
titration
Titration is a common laboratory method of quantitative chemical analysis to determine the concentration of an identified analyte (a substance to be analyzed). A reagent, termed the titrant or titrator, is prepared as a standard solution of known concentration and volume. The titrant reacts with a solution of analyte (which may also be termed the titrand]) to determine the analyte's concentration. The volume of titrant that reacted with the analyte is termed the titration volume.
Example: The method used to measure the total acidity of the vinegar being studied is an analytical chemistry technique called an acid-base TITRATION.

white lab coat
noun
A white coat, also known as a laboratory coat or lab coat, is a knee-length overcoat or smock worn by professionals in the medical field or by those involved in laboratory work. The coat protects their street clothes and also serves as a simple uniform.
Example: You have to wear your WHITE LAB COAT to protect yourself in laboratory.
