My name is Marc-Antoine Fortin, and I have been studying in Mechanical engineering technology for three and a half years. This glossary will be for those who want to learn more about certain terms that are used in the industry. Mechanical engineering technology is a college course that can lead to literally everything. Once you graduate, the field of work is enormous. You can work in automotive industry, recreational industry, health field, and really everywhere else, as long as there is a need for someone to design a new part or assembly. This glossary contains 20 words, that will hopefully help someone someday if they wonder what a word means.
- automation
- The use of largely automatic equipment in a system of manufacturing or other production process.
- axle
- Shaft that transmits power from one end to the other.
- cad
- Computer-aided design.
- design
- A plan or drawing to show the look and function of a part or an assembly.
- fastener
- Hardware device that joins two or more objects/pieces together.
- gear
- Rotating part to transmit rotational motion and power.
- hydraulic
- control and transmission of power using pressurized liquids
- machine
- Physical system that uses power to apply forces and control movement.
- machine tool
- A non portable power tool, such as a lathe or milling machine, used for cutting or shaping metal, wood, or other material.
- machining
- Process where a part is created using machine tools.
- metallurgy
- The branch of science and technology concerned with the properties of metals and their production and purification.
- motors
- Motors/electric motors convert electrical energy into mechanical motion.
- piston
- A disk or short cylinder fitting closely within a tube in which it moves up and down against a liquid or gas, used in an internal combustion engine to derive motion, or in a pump to impart motion.
- planning
- The process of making plans for something.
- pneumatic
- Control and transmission of power using pressurized air.
- project
- An individual or collaborative enterprise that is carefully planned to achieve a particular plan.
- research
- Studious inquiry or examination.
- software
- Computer programs.
- tool
- A handheld device that aids in accomplishing a task.
- welding
- Metalworking technique to join two metal pieces together.
