20 Prehospital Emergency Care terms

This glossary is made so anyone that is interested in this field of study will be able to learn some important information about para medicine. I have been studying in this program for now 3 semesters. Paramedics are professionals that are trained to act as a bridge between the call and the hospital. After 3 to 4 years of learning, these individuals may face any medical situations that they will encounter.

angioplasty
noun
Surgical repair or unblocking of a blood vessel, esp. A coronary artery.
Example: This patient must be seen in angioplasty STAT.

noun
A condition in which the heart no longer beats and usually cannot be restarted.
Example: The defibrillator shows an asystole.

bag-valve masks
noun
An airway apparatus used to cover the patient's nose and mouth and begin ventilating the lungs mechanically by squeezing a reservoir of oxygen or air.
Example: Please get the bag-valve mask ready.

bradycardic
noun
A slowing of the heart rate to less than 60 beats per minute.
Example: This patient is bradycardic.

bronchitis
noun
Is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi.
Example: This patient suffers from a bronchitis.

cerebral vascular accident
noun
A stroke, sometimes referred to as a cerebrovascular accident, is the rapid loss of brain function due to disturbance in the blood supply to the brain. This can be due to ischemia caused by blockage, or a hemorrhage.
Example: This patient shows signs of a cerebral vascular accident

cyanosis

A bluish discoloration of the skin resulting from a poor circulation or inadequate oxygenation of the blood.
Example: This patient shows cyanosis signs.

Sweating, esp. To an unusual degree as a symptom of disease or a side effect of a drug.
Example: This patient has diaphoresis.

glasgow coma scale
noun
A neurological scale that aims to give a reliable, objective way of recording the conscious state of a person for initial as well as subsequent assessment.
Example: This patient has Glasgow coma scale of 13.

glucagon
noun
A hormone produced in the pancreas when glucose in the blood is low. It helps the body raise glucose levels by releasing glucose's storage.
Example: I'm going to give this person 2 ml of glucagon.

Failure of the immune system to protect the body adequately from infection, due to the absence or insufficiency of some component process or substance.
Example: This patient has an immunodeficiency with cortisols.

A device that is used in vehicle extrication to remove stable victims of traffic collisions from motor vehicles.
Example: Use the KED on this patient.

nitroglycerin
noun
An explosive yellow liquid made by nitrating glycerol, used in explosives such as dynamite. It is also used in medicine as a vasodilator in the treatment of angina pectoris.
Example: We gave to this patient 5 CC of nitroglycerin.

An object used to keep the respiratory tract open for an unconscious patient.
Example: The tongue is blocking, use an oropharyngeal cannula.

The science of the causes and effects of diseases, esp. The branch of medicine that deals with the laboratory examination of samples of body tissue for diagnostic or forensic purposes.
Example: We are looking to cure this cardiac pathology.

Formation of a clot in the deep venous system of the lower limbs which can cause a pulmonary embolism.
Example: This patient as a thombophlebitis.

noun
An ulcer is an open sore of the skin, eyes or mucous membrane, accompanied by the disintegration of tissue.
Example: Look at this disgusting ulcer.
