Cosmetic nursing is a field that is focused on diverse non-surgical procedures that have the goal of enhancing people's appearance. This glossary could help others in this field to understand important terms, procedures and techniques to stay informed.
- active ingredients
- Ingredients used in cosmetic and esthetic products to act on the skin in a specific way.
- albinism
- An inherited disorder in which there is no pigmentation in skin, hair, or eyes due to the absence of melanin, the substance that gives skin its color.
- apparatology
- Set of devices and equipment used to perform medical or aesthetic treatments. They may include X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging, electrocardiographs and vital sing monitors.
- autologen
- A material used in lip augmentation to produce a look of fuller lips. Autologen is derived from your own skin and then injected into the lips.
- botox
- A drug prepared from the bacterial toxin botulin, used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles.
- carboxytherapy
- Cosmetic treatment in which carbon dioxide is applied through fine needles in the subcutaneous layer of the skin to cause alterations in the tissues.
- cavitation
- Technique used in aesthetic medicine to eliminate fat in a localized and non-invasive way.
- cosmetic
- Involving or relating to a treatment intended to restore or improve a person’s appearance.
- dermatology
- The branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders.
- emollient
- Substances that have the property of moisturizing the skin.
- fillers
- Medical devices implants approved by the FDA for use in helping to create a smoother and/or fuller appearance in the face.
- intralipotherapy
- A treatment that uses a formulation called sodium deoxycolate to actively break down lipids (fats) under the skin, allowing your body to excrete it naturally as you would dietary fats.
- mesotherapy
- Technique used to rejuvenate the skin by means of a trans dermal injection of a multivitamin solution and natural plant extracts that are thought to improve the signs of skin aging.
- micro-needling
- A cosmetic procedure that involves pricking the skin with tiny, sterilized needles.
- microdermabrasion
- A minimally invasive epidermal resurfacing procedure used to treat uneven skin ton/texture, photo aging, striae, melasma, and scars, including acne scars.
- non-invasive procedures
- A procedure that does not require inserting an instrument through the skin or into a body opening.
- non-surgical blepharoplasty
- A non-invasive cosmetic treatment that seeks to rejuvenate the eyes by removing excess skin in the upper and lower eyelids without the need for surgery.
- rejuvenation
- The restoration of a youthful appearance to something.
- skincare
- A range of practices that support skin integrity, enhance its appearance, and relive skin condition.
- treatment
- Medical care given to a patient for an illness of injury.
